The Rumorist: Del Frisco’s to Frisc Phoenix

January 27, 2012 | 2:00 PM | Eat & Drink | By Staff

We just received anonymous pictures from a loyal reader of the Dallas-based restaurant Del Frisco’s renovating the space at the Esplanade where Houston’s bailed. Del Frisco’s is scraping the old interiors to the bone, just like you will be scraping a plate of their 24 oz Prime Porterhouse Steak with Cauliflower & Brie Au Gratin soon. No word on when they’ll be “frisking” Phoenix at the “Do Right & Fear No Man” steakhouse or why they call it that, but sounds exciting, right?!

Speaking of the Esplanade where the DLT office is, any takers for the McCormick & Schmick’s space yet? If you’ve got the inside Scoop, let us know by emailing [email protected] Quality insider tips pay in virtual high-fives and your name as “Staff” on the byline.

Here’s a tasty little nugget. Word is a famed local chef is elbowing into the Valley’s most competitive culinary corner. Yes, this former French wunderkind, who’s lately been known to cook some badass tacos, is taking over the old Zen 32 space at 32nd Street and Camelback.

Arizona Foothills Rumorist Update

April 8, 2011 | 4:20 PM | Local | By Staff

So we put in a call to Arizona Foothills Magazine owner, Michael Dee, to respond to our Rumorist piece that they have ceased publishing and will move to an all-online format, but he’s not responded so far. However, we did see this Tweet from Mr. Dee, so we’re going to go out on a limb and say he strongly denies our speculation.

Even better, they’ve gone and posted a pic of the issue in question (hostage being held for ransom-style). So it looks like the rumors of AFM‘s print demise have been greatly exaggerated. Which, as fellow journalists, is great news. We don’t need any more unemployed media folks out there. We’re really not good at much beside writing/marketing/design (and eating free food at media events).

Got more info? We’d love to hear from you (and always protect our sources).

The Rumorist: AZ Foothills Mag To Cease Killing Trees

April 8, 2011 | 12:34 PM | Local | By Staff

Well folks, it looks like another sad day for local journalists, as the word on the street is that Arizona Foothills Magazine‘s March issue was their last. In traditional glossy print format, that is.

Yes, sources have confirmed to us that AFM‘s printer is reportedly refusing to print any more issues until this Scottsdale-based publication settles up its outstanding debt. Meanwhile, we’ve also heard from multiple people that they never received their copy of the March “Best of” issue, including some who were actually featured in the issue.

This is a breaking news story, and we don’t proclaim to have all of the facts here. However, if it’s true it would be a yet another significant loss for the local publishing scene that’s been hammered by the one-two punch of the economic downturn and  the long-term flight of ad dollars from traditional print to online and social media marketing. (Click here to see our ongoing coverage of the death of traditional TV and print media)

We’re reaching out to the powers-that-be at AFM to confirm or deny. But one thing’s for sure, we look forward to reading clicking through the April issue!

Scottsdale DUI suspect, Coco Crisp (at left) hanging with Charlie 'WINNING' Sheen

As chosen by you, here are the most popular stories OF ALL TIME (aka last week). Just in case you missed it.

Hello fellow gossip lovers. We’re back with a juicy Scoop on one of Charlie Sheen’s BFFs (OK, acquaintances) who was just busted for DUI in Scottsdale. In case you missed it, Oakland A’s baseball player, Coco Crisp was arrested early Wednesday morning in on suspicion of drunk driving in his $400,000 Rolls Royce.

And as we’ve exclusively confirmed, Crisp and his boys were knocking back bottles of Grey Goose and Patron earlier that night in the VIP section at Smashboxx, a trendy nightclub in Downtown Scottsdale. Just another day in the home of the nation’s strictest DUI laws, right?

Well, it turns out that Crisp was recently pictured hanging out with Charlie ‘Tiger’s Blood’ Sheen, and they’d even exchanged phone numbers so they could hangout again, Crisp told TMZ.

Hey hey, everybody. Long time no chat, but we’re back with a tasty scoop on the media shakeup du jour. In case you missed it, local foodies are still in shock over the sudden departure of one of the Valley’s two remaining full-time food critics. Yes, Michele Laudig, the Phoenix New Times‘ longtime Chow Bellista up and left the table on Tuesday, writing only that, “It’s been a blast, but I’ve decided to embrace the future – just wait until you see what I’ve got in the works.”

Well, we’ve also seen the future and think we have a pretty good handle on where Laudig is planting her flag fork next.

We Knew It!

January 13, 2011 | 12:02 PM | Restaurants | By Staff

Today, the Montelucia Resort confirmed a rumor that we first posted right after the New Year. Yes, chef Peter DeRuvo will be taking over at Prado, the resort’s signature dining space. Formerly of Sassi in North Scottsdale, and very briefly, of the grease-fire that was the Vatra Grillhouse, DeRuvo “will continue Prado’s commitment to working with local farmers and purveyors to bring the freshest and best of ingredients straight from the farm to the table, prepared with authenticity, elegant simplicity and international flair,” reads the press release.

All of which would sound like the usual PR spin, if we didn’t know this guy has real chops, and probably knows more about olive oil than most olive trees.

Quick update on our breaking news about the Vatra Grillhouse/Kitchen 56 switcheroo. Looks like Peter DeRuvo, the top-flight chef the owners imported from North Scottsdale to whip the place into shape, might not be manning the kitchen when the restaurant re-opens later this year. In fact, word is he’s going to replace another high-profile chef who abruptly left his resort restaurant earlier this year.

Recently, we speculated that a couple of Valley super-chefs would be joining forces at the historic Wigwam Resort. And while it’s true that James Beard Award-winner, chef Chris Bianco is working with his longtime BFF and former Phoenix Suns owner, Jerry Colangelo, to revamp the food program at this famed resort, the Wigwam’s PR shot down our theory that Bianco buddy, chef Claudio Urciuoli will be taking over at the Wigwam after suddenly leaving Prado inside the Intercontinental Montelucia Resort last month.

So where will the talented (if mercurial) chef Urciuoli be hanging his chef’s whites for the foreseeable future?

Sky Harbor sure has been in the news a lot lately. From nearly-naked passengers and in-flight doggie drama, to the ongoing construction of a $1.1 billion roller-coaster ride, it’s been a busy month at the Valley’s busiest airport. Not to mention the continued turbulence surrounding Sky Harbor’s attempt to upgrade it’s crappy, super-corporate food offerings.

However, we finally have some happy flying news to report. Guess which famed local chef has been hired to upgrade Sky Harbor’s food into a first-class, locally-focused operation?

Here at DLT‘s worldwide HQ inside the Esplande at 24th St & Camelback, we’ve been in a bit of a funk watching the new Houston’s restaurant go up across the street. Soon we might actually have to expose our pasty skin to the sun when we want our French Dip fix, as our fav upscale chain moves two whole blocks up the street. However, we just noticed a new sign that seems to confirm a crazy rumor someone told us months back. Yes, it looks like Houston’s corporate owners are bringing a new concept here to the Valley. Can you say overpriced sushi, anyone?
