Superstitious? Then today is the day to avoid all black cats, ladders and men wearing hockey masks. Best lock yourself in your home and just read about other’s unfortunate run-ins. Here are some tales from around the world to make sure you don’t fall victim to the Friday the 13th curse. If you’re thinking we’re going to provide tips on how to evade a machete-wielding maniac, think again. We’re here to share wine superstitions from around the globe, courtesy of our friends at The Daily Sip.

Reminiscent of throwing salt over your shoulder, the Italians believe that spilled wine must be dabbed behind each ear. The Romans believed that spilling vino was a bad oman.

The ancient Egyptian royals were buried with a few jars of wine, along with many treasures and even some servants, to bring into the afterlife with them.

When someone dies in Germany, the wine in their collection must be shaken as soon as possible.

The Lithuanians believe that on every Christmas Eve at midnight, water turns to wine and animals start talking when no human is near.

Hip hop artists today must have taken cues from the Romanians. Traditionally, when a Romanian dies, their friends pour wine on the ground, so they can drink together one more time. This is probably the oldest form of “pouring one on the curb for your homies.”
