Reuniting Feels So Good

August 15, 2011 | 7:55 AM | Events | By Staff

It’s hard to believe a decade has passed since the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Yankees to win the 2001 World Championship. Admittedly, it’s been so long, we had to look up their opponent! Ten years later, Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino is commemorating the win by hosting a World Championship Reunion party, featuring Luis Gonzales and other players of the winning team, Thursday, September 8th.

The free event is open to the first 700 D-Backs fans. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. in the Acacia Ballroom. Sorry fans, no autographs, but you’ll get to meet the players and win prizes.

Misery Loves Phoenix?

May 4, 2011 | 7:25 AM | Sports | By Staff

Those endless list-makers at Forbes (seriously, don’t they have a magazine to print from time to time) are at it yet again. This time they’ve compiled a list of America’s Most Miserable Sports Cities. And guess who made the top 5? Yes, Phoenix was named the #3 most miserable city for fans thanks to our one championship over 92 cumulative seasons across the four major sports. Plus, our Phoenix Suns were also singled out for being so heart-breakingly close so many times.

Two important things the story forgot to mention: Robert Horry is still a dick and David Stern is still a toadie.

Worth Repeating: Forget Peanuts and Crackerjacks

April 10, 2011 | 10:00 AM | Eat & Drink | By Staff

Just a quick reminder, today’s opening day at Chase Field, which means we can finally stop dreaming about these new gourmet hot dogs (pictured above) and finally wrap out mitts around one, or five.

Over the years, we’ve had plenty of fun at the expense of over-priced corporate eateries. (See Airport, Sky Harbor) So it’s only fair that when a massive conglomerate steps up its culinary chops, we should give it a little love. Yes, Chicago-based Levy Restaurants has been the nation’s leader in dreary sports stadium food for decades, overseeing the mustard-smeared menus everywhere from Lambeau Field in Green Bay to the Valley’s own Chase Field.

And now it seems that Levy’s finally got the message that if fans are going to be forced to overpay for ballpark grub, at least they could make it gourmet quality. Yes, starting with the Arizona Diamondbacks‘ home opener this Friday, April 8, seam-heads will be able to savor all-new items such as all-natural Niman Ranch sausages, including apple gouda, chipotle cheddar and spicy Italian. Then there’s the line-up of ‘Extreme Loaded Dogs’ (pictured), such as the Tailgate on a Plate, piled high with baked beans, potato salad, BBQ sauce and shredded cheddar.

Downtown Phoenix's new Province restaurant features bold Latin flavors such as shrimp and grits with Manchego cheese

Are you counting down the days until opening day at Chase Field? Do the D’backs have a chance to rebound from back-to-back awful seasons? If we knew the answer to that last one, we’d be in Vegas right now. But one thing we do know, there are some great new pre- and post-game drinking and drinking options in Downtown Phoenix. After all, just because you’re going to a baseball game doesn’t mean you have to settle for greasy nachos and (crappy) $12 beers. Hit up one of these sleek new hotspots featuring some serious culinary chops.

Tucked into the first-floor of the soaring new Westin Phoenix Downtown, Province restaurant is a stylish new spin-off of the Chicago original. Featuring a bold (and surprisingly affordable) menu of Modern Latin dishes, Province is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner up until 10 pm. Meet Scottsdale’s Most Infamous Mistress

March 29, 2011 | 7:12 AM | News | By Staff

Recently, baseball’s all-time homerun king, Barry Bonds, went on trial in San Francisco for lying to Feds investigators about his alleged use of steroids. Shocking we know, that an athlete’s whose hat size expanded noticeably in his late 30s might have been on the juice. However, what is  surprising is that the star of the show hasn’t been the famously-prickly slugger, or even Bonds’ personal trainer, a lifelong pal who’s literally spent years in jail for refusing to throw Bonds under the bus.

No, the real star of this sordid show has been Kimberly Bell, Bonds’ longtime mistress and Scottsdale resident who claimed that the baseball star threatened “to cut my head off and leave me in a ditch,” as well as cut off the breast implants that he paid for. Aye aye aye.

Sunday Funny: Smells Like Team Spirit

October 3, 2010 | 11:25 AM | Sports | By Frank Johnson

Um, here’s an odd one. So who are those burly boys rocking the swim-goggles-and-banana-hammock look? None other than the Arizona Diamondbacks rookies, enjoying a little hazing ritual as they were forced to dress up down before taking a bus to the airport. Then again, with the way the team has performed this year, maybe everybody should be dressing up as Bikini ‘Backs.

Spring (Training) is in the Air

January 17, 2010 | 12:29 AM | Sports | By Anna Bussert

Believe it or not, but Spring Training season is right around the corner here in the Valley. And starting this season, the home team will be playing inside a state-of-the-art new stadium just outside Scottsdale. Wanna take a sneak peek?

If you’ve driven down the 101 near Via de Ventura lately, you’ve likely noticed the ever-growing sports stadium just off the highway. The used-to-be dirt lot will soon be home to our struggling beloved Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies. The boffo new stadium (officially named Salt River Fields at Talking Stick) will feature batting cages, twelve practice fields, clubhouses, 11,000 seats for the baseball masses, and fan observation areas, allowing game goers a glimpse of the players’ training routines. Thankfully, the stadium will open just in time (hopefully) for the 2011 spring training season. Prepare yourself for baseball 2011 and check out some of these stadium renderings we’ve scooped up for you.
