Grab a frosty mint julep and don your floppiest, frilliest hat because it’s Weekend Guide time. But first we’d like to say happy Mother’s Day to all of you lovely ladies out there. (Click here for last-minute shopping deals, or here for a dining deal roundup.) OK, now let’s get back to the pretty ponies and silly headpieces.
Yes, this Saturday is the 137th annual Run for the Roses, aka the Kentucky Derby. And while you can watch it at any ol’ sports bar, why not head on down to the Valley’s own version of Churchill Downs? Sure, Turf Paradise is nowhere near as frou-frou as its sister track in the rolling hills of Kentucky, but there’s still a certain allure to watching these gorgous animals in person. Live racing kicks off at 11:30 am, and admission starts at only $5 (although we suggest upgrading to the air-conditioned Clubhouse or Turf Club levels featuring all-you-can-eat buffets.)
