This. Is. SPARTA!

January 23, 2012 | 4:30 PM | Sports | By Maxfield Barker

Coming back to the Valley Feb. 11, is the Spartan Race Challenge taking place at Rawhide in Chandler. Thousands of mud-covered participants will dart from one obstacle to the next, throwing spears and jumping fire. Forget Ironman, this is the true test of strength and endurance.

Taking place near the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino in Chandler, the obstacle course challenges individual’s resilience, strength, stamina, quick decision making skills, and ability to laugh in the face of adversity, while we watch from the sidelines.

This eight mile, 20 obstacle course race has gained National attention and has grown in popularity as it travels to a new state every 2-3 weeks and challenges people who train, prepare, and live for these obstacle races. The top three male and female competitors at the race will qualify for free entry into the Spartan Death Race. Is this madness? No, this is SPARTA.

Fiesta Bowl Dos and Don’ts

January 2, 2012 | 12:00 PM | Recipes | By Kira Brown

You can bring your game face and your sponge finger, but you can’t bring the following to tonight’s Fiesta Bowl kicking off at 6:30 p.m. at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. AZ Central reports, “Certain items won’t be allowed in the stadium. They include weapons, folding chairs, beach balls, umbrellas, video cameras, food, cameras with detachable lenses, bottles and cans.”

The ultimate “do” of the Fiesta Bowl starts at 12:30 today for the Pre-Game tailgate at the Stadium’s North Orange Lot. Visit Phoenix reports admission to the tailgate is $20 and includes “Activities such as pep rallies, performances by the university marching bands and cheerleaders, jumbotrons to watch team highlights, interactive games, and food and beverage booths all help fans prepare for the big game. Keep your ticket to enjoy a free tailgate-inspired meal which is included in your admission.” Join the party from 12:30 – 5:30 p.m. today.

Staying home for the game? Maybe mix up a batch of DLT’s favorite Artichoke Dip. Or, check out my favorite, super quick party recipe for Tuzzi Dip:

Ingredients:
2 package cream cheese
1 pound hot sausage
1 can of dices tomatoes with green chili (I prefer Rotel)

Preparation:
Brown sausage in skillet.
Heat tomatoes in saucepan and add cream cheese. Stir to melt together. When melted, add sausage.
Serve with tortilla chips or slices of baguette bread.

Wanna skip the dishes and watch the game out? Here’s our top 3 picks for places to watch tonight’s game:

Zipps Sports Cafe – With 8 locations in the Valley to serve. Check locations here.

Four Peaks Brewery in Tempe – If the game stinks, at least your beer won’t. Click here for location.

The Herb Box – The best place to take your lady for the game. Click here for the location near you.

A Cardinals’ Quarterback Sneak

November 16, 2011 | 2:35 PM | News | By Kira Brown

Hey, give this guy a raise. Former Philly’s Quarterback, now Arizona Cardinals’ player Kevin Kolb rants to a Philadelphia radio station yesterday that he may have helped our birds win this past weekend by calling out a bunch of plays that the Eagles’ were about to run. Seems, the Eagles’ haven’t changed up their signals and plays since Kolb’s departure, helping Kolb guide players to victory with his sideline sneaks.

“It was funny, as they were lining up for the plays, I’d go ‘Hold on, they’re gonna do this.’ And you don’t know if they changed things up or what… but the ones that I was for sure on, I was letting it ring, and I think I helped us out maybe just a little bit here and there,” he told Philly.com. Whatever, however, we’ll take the win.

Feeling Like a Butterball?

November 7, 2011 | 9:30 AM | Sports | By Claire Hoogenboom

Been feeling like a butterball? Looking for a way to avoid a few post-pumkin’ pie pounds and/or your in-laws this Thanksgiving? Enter the First 3rd Annual Sedona Turkey Trot, November 24th. The scenic 5K run starts and ends at Posse Grounds Park in Sedona, Arizona, Thanksgiving Day from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Technically, you could still make it back to the Valley for stuffing, toasty Brown’N'Serve dinner rolls and a good ol’ family fight, but kickin’ it in Sedona Thanksgiving weekend, even the exercise part, sounds like a winner to us

Looking for more of a challenge? Opt to trot the “Iron Turkey” way by carrying a frozen or thawed turkey the entire distance of the race.

Holding Court

September 14, 2011 | 9:45 AM | Sports | By Chad Hays

Though the NBA is in a lockout and players like Steve Nash are kicking around soccer balls instead of shooting game-winning free throws, the Phoenix Suns organization is holding court with a line up of community activities as the drama gets hashed out and the Suns recruit a new CEO.

Wednesday, September 14th, meet the Suns’ Dancers as they unveil their new 2011-12 uniforms at a free event from 6 – 8 p.m. Win raffle prizes and purchase the new 11-game ticket plan.

Friday, September 16, the Suns’ Operation Orange initiative will be rolling into USA Skateland in Chandler. From 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., anyone wearing orange will get free admission and can roll around the rink and participate in family-friendly games with the Gorilla, Suns Dancers, Solar Squad and of course, our favorite ex-player-turned-emcee, Cedric Ceballos.

Do you have mad trampoline and acrobatic skills (like us) that you’ve just been dying to show off (again, like us)? It’s time to put those hours spent perfecting your back flip in the backyard to good use. Audition for the high-flying Verve Sol Patrol team, on Saturday, September 17th at 10 a.m. at US Airways Center to join the “Sol” train if when the season resumes.
