Distrito: Delicious by Design

Scottsdale’s new establishment The Saguaro Hotel may be Arizona’s freshest and most vibrant place for a weekend respite. More destination than staycation, the hotel, which was designed by New York-based architectures Stamberg Aferiat, is a vivid tribute to the colorful sights and animated settings of the Southwest, with a color palette of tangerine, buttery yellow, magenta and bright, rich green. If the atmosphere and welcoming spa isn’t enough to bring you out, however, perhaps the restaurants will – most notably, modern Mexican eatery Distrito, the sibling of Iron Chef’s Jose Garces’ celebrated Philadelphia dig of the same name.

Stemming from the hotel’s southwestern shades, the delicious interior design of Distrito is energetic and contemporary, based upon the brilliant, spirited hues of Mexican culture. Designer Jun Aizaki, who hailed from Brooklyn, New York’s Crème Design Collective, was inspired by the landscapes of the region and created the restaurant’s interior to feel both traditional and fresh. A colorful skull feature by the lobby entrance, for example, is celebratory of Mexico’s Day of the Dead; a backlit resin bar counter with butterfly embeds, a mosaic felt ball feature wall resembling bright gumballs and a woven flat elastic screen wall at the banquettes are novel, modern and invigorating. Clothespin chandeliers and table tops sprinkled with pink and gold glitter add a further funky edge to the restaurant’s style. Guests can order Hamachi tacos fresh off the skillet, a variety of Barbacoa, margaritas from over 100 varieties of tequila at the margarita bar and the tortilla and guacamole station, where tortillas are made-to-order on a quilted stainless steel food-vendor-style post, are authentically delicious by chef’s design.

FnB + Three = Four To Love

February 2, 2012 | 1:10 PM | Eat & Drink | By Kira Brown

Chef Charleen Badman and Pavle Milic of Valley favorite FnB will add three new food and wine hot spots to the Scottsdale dining scene this week. The trio of openings include Baratin Cafe – a small dining spot, AZ Wine Merchants – a boutique wine shop, and Bodega – a green grocer and market, converging at the palm tree-lined courtyard of the Kiva Center in Old Town Scottsdale.

Housed in a wonderful 50s-era building with mosiacs, high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, the three venues will be much like FnB -  small, charming, light-filled and unique. Find Arizona Wine Merchants  to the left, Baratin in the middle and Bodega to the right, each with its own entrance but each accessible to the other from the inside.

Baratin opens today and Arizona Wine Merchants and Bodega are set to open tomorrow.

The Rumorist: Del Frisco’s to Frisc Phoenix

January 27, 2012 | 2:00 PM | Eat & Drink | By Kira Brown

We just received anonymous pictures from a loyal reader of the Dallas-based restaurant Del Frisco’s renovating the space at the Esplanade where Houston’s bailed. Del Frisco’s is scraping the old interiors to the bone, just like you will be scraping a plate of their 24 oz Prime Porterhouse Steak with Cauliflower & Brie Au Gratin soon. No word on when they’ll be “frisking” Phoenix at the “Do Right & Fear No Man” steakhouse or why they call it that, but sounds exciting, right?!

Speaking of the Esplanade where the DLT office is, any takers for the McCormick & Schmick’s space yet? If you’ve got the inside Scoop, let us know by emailing editor@scoopfactory.com. Quality insider tips pay in virtual high-fives and your name as “Staff” on the byline.

Worth Repeating: SOL Cocina Coming to Valley of the Sun

January 14, 2012 | 2:00 PM | Eat & Drink | By Kira Brown

As chosen by you, here are the most popular stories of ALL TIME aka last week just in case you missed.

Authentic coastal Mexican restaurant, SOL Mexican Cocina, is coming to serve their modern Baja mexican to the Scottsdale Quarter in March. The new Scottsdale location will be the second for the Newport Beach-based company, who opened the first in 2009.

The restaurant aims to juxtapose old world charm with modern sophistication in the 260 seat restaurant, with indoor/outdoor seating, fire pit and a bustling open-air kitchen. Menu items by Executive Chef Deborah Schneider will include Taco Vampire, Hot & Raw Ceviche, Shortribs Barbacoa, Kobe Skirt Steak and more. And plenty of vegetarian, gluten free and even vegan-friendly options will be available for the health and diet conscious. The company calls it their ‘stealth health’ approach, gearing the menu towards fresh, delicious food that happens to be low-fat and healthful – though there are plenty of indulgences to be had as well, such as the ‘Tres Pecados’ (Three Sins) – a rich dulce de leche flan with caramel, dark chocolate-almond bark and whipped cream.

Chef Schneider, dubbed the “reigning queen of San Diego chefs,” by Bon Appetit and was nominated for a 2009 James Beard Foundation Award for her second cookbook, Cooking with the Seasons at Rancho La Puerta.

SOL Mexican Cocina is set to open at the Scottsdale Quarter in March.

10 Fro-Yo Stops for the Healthy Sugarholic

January 9, 2012 | 2:30 PM | Eat & Drink | By Hannah Hayes

Image via A Touch of Yogurt

Did you swear off sweets for a New Year’s resolution? Don’t worry – fro-yo is here (as if you haven’t noticed) to help you maintain both your goal for 2012 and your daily weekly sweet indulgence. The lightly tart and savory dessert (which has less fat than regular ice cream and is jam-packed with active cultures) is now at hotspots all over the valley, and from Glendale to Chandler, we’ve rounded up ten of our favorites, because sometimes a sweet treat is just as important for getting through the daily grind as morning coffee.

1. A Touch of Yogurt in Phoenix: A Valley original, our favorite flavors are Scotchmallow and Lemon Cheesecake.

2. Desert Swirl Frozen Yogurt, Phoenix and Glendale: A little pricier than standard yogurt, but worth it: they carry the “Only 8″ brand of yogurt that has zero fat and zero preservatives and is safe for the lactose-intolerant.

3. JazzYogurt, Scottsdale: “The Place Where Frozen Yogurt Meets Soul:” monthly live music and unique seasonal flavors (Orange Holiday Bread, anyone?) has this new shop gaining quick popularity.

4. Yogurt Builderz in Scottsdale: Known for hard-to-find flavors like pineapple tart, honeydew and marshmallow (they carry “Only 8″ too!)

Image via YOCO Yogurt Company

5. Aloha Yogurt in Tempe: For a very late-night treat, Aloha is open till 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 12 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

6. Yogurt Company, Scottsdale: We call it “breakfast yogurt;” they also serve gourmet coffee and Belgian waffles.

7. ZenZen Yogurt in Phoenix: Shaved ice or fro-yo? We’ll take both (really!)

8. Kokomo Frozen Yogurt in Chandler: simple flavors, lots of fresh fruit, cute, clean store…sometimes we just want frozen yogurt without all the frills.

9. Yogurtopia, Scottsdale and Gilbert: The flavors (from root-beer float to cherry amaretto) and toppings are literally endless.

10. U-Swirl, Mesa, Scottsdale and Phoenix: They may be a nationwide franchise, but we love that this famous fro-yo shop has finally arrived in the Valley.

Cask 63 Pours Today

January 9, 2012 | 12:30 PM | Eat & Drink | By Kira Brown

Cask 63 American Eatery & Wine Bar opens today at 4:00 p.m. at the Shops Gainey Village in Scottsdale where the ill-fated Bloom restaurant used to serve. The chef inspired American restaurant and bar by partners Jerry Tingle of Eddie V’s and Chef Brian Feirstein, Executive Chef of Eddie V’s and most recently The Capital Grille, will serve eclectic American lunch and dinner offerings from their sleek, contemporary space. The new restaurant says this about their partnership and the restaurant, “From the beginning, we both shared the vision of this being an inviting and not intimidating wine bar – the kind of place we would want to hang out with family and friends, sip good wine and enjoy great food,” said Tingle. “It takes 31 ½ gallons of wine to fill a cask, which is a generous amount that invites sharing. So we multiplied that number by two – a toast to us, two business partners who share the same vision.”  We can’t wait to try the Seared Scallops, Taco of the Day at lunch and indulge in a glass of wine from their nitrous decanters on the back bar wall.

Opening today for dinner, enjoy 1/2 off select drinks and appetizers for a happy hour grand opening celebration beginning at 4:00 p.m.
