Trade In Your Old Makeup at Zethina’s

April 19, 2012 | 4:00 PM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

How many of us actually keep track of when we purchased and started using certain types of makeup? Not as often as we’d like, though it would be a great idea, we admit. Keeping track of your makeup’s age keeps you at low risk for skin problems – on the other hand, letting that foundation sit around for an extra few months direly puts you on the line for developing breakouts, allergic reactions, discoloration and other unsightly horrors. Zethina’s to the rescue! Until May 5, the Westside cosmetic and skin care spa is accepting your old makeup, in return for which they will give you $5 for each old cosmetic item, which applies to the purchase of a new item.  Trade in as many old items as you like and stock up on new makeup that’s actually good for your skin. All they ask is for no sample-size products.

In addition, Zethina’s is providing the following Mother’s Day Specials, because it is just around the corner, remember?

  • Give mom a brightening facial with eye treatment, mini make-up lesson and up-to-date spring/summer trends. Includes a new lip color and eye shadow of her choice.  Cost is $175 ($260 value).
  • Treat Mom to a 75-min massage/reflexology combo, 45 minute enzyme facial for just $145 ($185 value)

Scottsdale Welcomes Avery Lane

April 19, 2012 | 9:30 AM | Furniture | By Hannah Hayes

Last month Avery Lane, North Scottsdale’s newest destination for fine furniture consignment, antique and specialty gifts, celebrated their grand opening in style while supporting local charities. Proprietor Darlene Richert hosted over 250 guests for the event which benefited Childhelp and Crisis Nursery. Guests were ushered through sweeping black and white drapes and greeted by a French accordion player and entertaining mime, complimenting the divine Jean Claude Boisset Champagne and Herb Box fare. In addition, the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce graced the evening with a ribbon cutting which included a warm welcome from Scottsdale City Councilman Bob Littlefield.

Avery Lane showcases treasures from famous lines such as Kreiss, Drexel Heritage, Clive Christiansen, Robb & Stucky and Ethan Allen – from some of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Arcadia’s most fabulous homes as well as local interior designer’s warehouses. In addition to fabulous furniture finds, browse gorgeous French, Italian and English antiques from the 17th and 18th century or find a charming gift in the shops gift mart. Avery Lane also features divine toffee from local bakery Sweet-Stops and is one of the few locations in the Valley where shoppers can pick up a box of the sweet treats. We All Need a Little More (Vintage) Junk in the Trunk

April 10, 2012 | 12:30 PM | Art & Entertainment | By Hannah Hayes

Vintage flea markets are a great reason to get away from the Valley. Driving to Pasadena to find a  perfectly aged armoire makes for a great road trip – but although the heat is rising, the price of gas right now just doesn’t make road trips as easy – or fun – as they used to be. Thankfully, someone got a clue and is bringing a vintage market here. At 10 a.m. May 5 at WestWorld, Valley antique/vintage/full-on junk obsessives will have a chance to do what they do best at Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market, a day of vintage treasure hunting with some good old fashioned giveaways, design inspiration and handmade vintage themed goods from a slew of vendors like Blue Eyed Owl, Chic Headbands, Strawberry Hedgehog, Winifred Street and many more. We don’t know about you, but we’re absolutely pining for a little more junk in our trunks, and we love that it won’t require a road trip!

Early bird admission is $8 for adults and lasts from 9 – 10 a.m. General admission is $4; children under 12 are free and admission is free after 3 p.m. A portion of ticket sales will benefit Young Life, a non-denominational Christian organization serving youth in Phoenix.

Keep it Local, Easter-Basket Style

April 7, 2012 | 10:10 AM | Local | By Hannah Hayes

It is finally spring and with the scent of orange blossoms always comes one of our favorite holidays, Easter. Even though we’re all adults here, we still enjoy a sweet, springy visit from the Easter bunny every Easter morning, even if it’s just in the form of a bag of jelly beans. Forget those huge store-bought, brand-name, four-foot-tall Easter baskets we find at the grocery store this year, though. Not only is the candy never our favorite kinds but we’re also a little leery of what we may find inside. Whether you’re the creative type and prefer to make your Easter baskets or if you’d just like an idea of what treat to give the hubby this year, DLT has got the answers. Follow the jump for a list of local favorites to pack a last-minute punch in those Easter baskets this year.

Scratch and Sniff Jeans at HUB Clothing

April 5, 2012 | 1:30 PM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

Most of us just want our jeans to be comfortable and make our butts look good (admit it), but after two weeks of wearing the same pair (again, just admit it), the scent of our favorite denim can be a little off-putting. We’ll wash them, we promise, but before that happens we could use a little air-freshening. Thankfully, Naked and Famous has just released scented jeans, which is not anywhere close to the way they smell after pulling them out of the bottom of the hamper. Available at HUB Clothing in Scottsdale, these Scratch and Sniff jeans actually aren’t as crazy as they sound, having simply been coated with raspberry-scented micro capsules that Naked and Famous swears lasts even after five washes (so…like a year…ok, kidding about that one). Scented jeans that smell like raspberry candy without the calories? We’ll take two.

teres Puts the Man in MANicure

March 30, 2012 | 9:30 AM | Her | By Staff

It’s time to regularly buff and shine, gentlemen. And no, we’re not talking about your four-wheeled friend in the garage. We’re talking about your fingernails. Time to step it up for regular MANicures and we’ve got just the salon for you.

teres, a new nail bar concept in Scottsdale, is a relaxing manicure and pedicure oasis, suitable for those in suits and of course, ladies alike. The interiors of the salon are soothing, the essential oil add-ons for pedicure soaks are divine, and the private room for gentlemen (ladies too!) with a flat-screen TV to enjoy the game or the fight (or the latest chick-flick) during a proper buff and shine leaves little reason for men to opt out of a regular MANicure.

teres offers a pre-payment loyalty program for just $25 a month, which goes toward your monthly service, and promises to call and remind you if you haven’t used it. You can gift a service or roll your membership if you miss an appointment or for the commitment-phobes, you can forego the pre-payment plan all together and book services as usual. For the ladies, same great services and specials apply, including the latest baseball decals for your party nail to impress your man during spring and summer baseball season.

The Look! Local: Polka Dots from Pink House

March 29, 2012 | 12:30 PM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

I have spent my adult years with an aversion to every overly-cute form polka dots adopt. Too cute for me, I am enamored with prints and even stripes, but no dots. This was, of course, until recently, when I sauntered into Glendale retailer Pink House Boutique and encountered a breath of fresh (polka-dotted) air.

Glendale’s stylish storeroom sells vintage entities, clothing, accessories and furniture, much of it locally produced. My gem is a sheer, red-polka-dotted black blouse – an example of the shop’s modern take on classic womenswear. There is nothing saccharine about the blouse’s hot hues or sensuous fabric, and though it is rather formal, it is loose and relaxed. Flawless with pencil skirts as well as jeans, I am thrilled to wear this fashion-forward find out on the town. At a price of $22, Pink House’s feminine number is a charming local find.

The Montelucia: Fashion Destination

March 22, 2012 | 2:30 PM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

While resort is a season in the fashion world stuck between fall and spring of which many of us don’t have the time (or the means) to take advantage, resort shopping is a whole different story…especially when it’s shopping – at a resort – not too far from where we live. Giving us another reason to adore its plethora of high-end offerings, the Montelucia Resort & Spa is unveiling its newest venture with Dulcinea, a luxury women’s fashion boutique. As a destination, trend-centered boutique, Dulcinea will showcase designer dresses, tops, jeans and accessories from designers like as Diane Von Furstenberg, Trina Turk, Nicole Miller, Susana Monaco, Black Halo and Tory Burch. The boutique will also sell lines from Hudson Jeans, Tart and Michelle Jonas.

The elegant, old-world design on Dulcinea easily blends into the Montelucia’s Andalusian style, with a balance of subtle, sophisticated taupes, rich browns and creams accented with touches of Moroccan Blue. Traditional textures and architectural elements from the region are noticeable throughout the store. The addition of Moroccan lights, pottery, lutes and other regional influences complete the boutique’s look.

Dulcinea will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day. For more information, click here.

Near the end of the month, the high-end jeweler will be carrying Adrian Wilson’s favorite watch line, Hublot, for which Wilson will host a private launch party next week at The Mint. Currently, for ourselves and all the dashing gents in our lives, we’ve got our eyes set on this beautiful Formula One King Power Ceramic Chronograph timepiece. However, at a price point that requires a little patience, this will have to remain (for now) DLT’s Number One Object of Desire.

Biltmore Fashion Park Gets UNION-ized

March 22, 2012 | 9:30 AM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

Biltmore Fashion Park is getting UNION-ized: beginning in November 2012, Phoenix’s retail “crown- jewel” will add a diverse mix of local and independent retail in a new shopping experience called UNION. Planned for the east end of the shopping center between Stingray Sushi and Seasons 52, the 7200-square-foot platform for independent businesses will be a modern yet traditional shopping experience; the center will be in a contemporary, industrial atmosphere mixed with the warmth of various woods and romantic chandeliers. The space will be designed by architectural firm Plus/Minus Studio and will provide each retailer with two-to-five-hundred square feet of space with sliding doors and glass panels that allow for growth and change with the retailer’s needs. UNION is an opportunity to bring small, independent entrepreneurs and artists to Biltmore, replicating the unique retail mix historically found at Biltmore Fashion Park.

“This exciting new concept will give 11-13 shops and eateries an easy entry into an established marketplace while embracing the community and enhancing the retail mix of Biltmore Fashion Park,” said Mary Boyd-Williams, Senior Manager of Leasing for Macerich.

Biltmore Fashion Park has also partnered with a well-established local business owner and talented artistic designer, Lew Gallo, to help define the space and cultivate the essence of UNION.

“When I was an independent retailer, I always wanted to have my shop nestled among other like-minded merchants and still be able to benefit from a high-profile shopping center like Biltmore Fashion Park and that’s what UNION is,” said Gallo.

IIDA’s 5th Annual Couture Event

February 21, 2012 | 9:30 AM | Art & Entertainment | By Hannah Hayes

Who says couture happens only in Paris? Here at DLT, we believe our fair city is a hub of inspiring and talented design. Case in point: the Southwest Chapter of the International Interior Design Association will celebrate its 5th Annual Couture Event from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday, March 1 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel.

Benefitting The Ronald McDonald House Charities, Phoenix Chapter and I.D.C.A. (Interior Design Coalition of Arizona), local architects/designers (along with local interior design students) are randomly paired with a color forecast scheme and an industry material/product. They are then challenged to create and model a fashion using only those colors & materials. This year’s event draws inspiration from Antron Carpet Fiber’s “Reinterpretations – A Sign of the Times” 2012 Color Forecast. A Student Team will introduce each category in the Color Forecast, which are Folklore, Military, Modern Technology, New Boho, Retro 40’s, Retro 60’s, Romantic and Urban Minimalism. Then, each Professional Design Team will follow, in their assigned category, using their assigned “slide” with four colors and a key image as their inspiration.

Following a cocktail hour, fashion show and an intermission where guests will be able to vote for a “People’s Choice” award, a panel of celebrity and industry insider judges – including The Shoperone & DLT’s own Kira Brown – will give awards for the following categories: Best Styling (hair, make-up and accessories/props), Best Haute Couture (most fabulous), Best Pret-a-Porter (most wearable), Best Craftsmanship, Honorable Mention and Best of Show – Student Teams and Professional Teams.

Tickets range from $20 for students to $100 for VIP access. Click here to purchase your seat for this exciting and challenging fashion and design event.

Gainey Village Gains New Retailers

February 9, 2012 | 7:55 AM | Eat & Drink | By Hannah Hayes

Just in time for spring shopping, local favorite Scottsdale Jean Company has relocated to The SHOPS at Gainey Village, giving shoppers 8,000 brand-new sq. ft of men’s and women’s designer jeans, tops and casual wear. Celebrating their Grand Opening this Thursday, February 9, the store will also feature the full line of Kiehl’s skin, hair and body care products, a full sunglass shop, a customer lounge area and a children’s playroom.  “It was time for a new home for Scottsdale Jean Company after more than six years at our current location,” says owner Steven Koeppel. “As a destination retail establishment, our customers seek us out for our unbeatable selection and unparalleled customer service, featuring experts trained in finding the right size and style for any body type.” The Company will also soon unveil a new website that will emulate the in-store shopping experience.

If designer duds aren’t enough reason to spend an entire day at the Village, perhaps the area’s assortment of chic new shops and contemporary eateries will be. Opening in the former Bloom space in January, local restauranteurs Jerry Tingle and Chef Brian Fierstein’s Cask 63 American Eatery & Wine Bar offers eclectic American cuisine, an excellent wine menu and relaxed outdoor seating – great for taking a break between shopping destinations such as furniture showroom Kreiss; handcrafted clothing, accessory and houseware boutique A Cool Breeze, and del Adora, the Valley’s go-to source for luxury linens and bedding. At their second location, del Adora allows clients to choose from a huge selection of luxury fabrics to customize their homes, also offering a sumptuous collection of bath accessories, towels, fragrance and skin care products.

Before the day is done, complete the experience with a stop at healthy-takeout masters My Fit Foods, which just opened its first Valley location. For more information, click here.

Depp-Fav NightRider Jewelry Opens in Scottsdale

February 2, 2012 | 7:55 AM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

Image via JustJared

Tempe-based jeweler extraordinaire NightRider Jewelry will celebrate the opening of a new store from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. February 8 at Scottsdale Fashion Square. With prices ranging from $300 to $3,000, NightRider jewelry is the brainchild of high-end jewelry expert and artisan George Ganem and Nick and Thad Ballantyne, who put an emphasis on crosses, skulls and other silver handcrafted pieces in their designs. The jewelry, which is 100% American-made, has long been a favorite of the motorcycle crowd but has recently been adopted by Hollywood powerhouses like Alice Cooper, Kenny Chesney and –our personal favorite – Johnny Depp, who wore a NightRider design on the November 2011 cover of Vanity Fair.

“Our customers appreciate the fact that we make all of our products ourselves right here in the Valley, with no outsourcing whatsoever,” said Nick Ballantyne, of NightRider’s exponential growth at a time when so many are being forced to cut back on nonessentials. “Our careful craftsmanship ensures that our pieces hold their value, and that’s a major part of why so many of our customers have come back in time and time again.”

If we can’t order Johnny Depp for Valentine’s Day, we guess we’ll take a piece of his jewelry. Ok…not his actual jewelry. All right…fine. A similar piece will do.
