Back to School Trend: Hair Chalking

August 3, 2012 | 1:38 PM | Deals | By Staff

Some of latest trends around town have been neon. Neon colors everywhere. Whether it’s jeans or nails, bright colors are dominating this summer. So what’s the next step in this craze? Neon hair, of course but with a twist: hair chalking. It’s exactly what it sounds like, chalk for the hair.

With hair chalking, you can complement any outfit with streaks of color. The best part about hair chalking is that there is no commitment. Unlike other hair dying options, it’s not permanent and comes out with a simple shampoo, which means your hair’s color can change at the same pace as your outfit.

Mane Attraction, the salon behind the chalking, offers a shampoo, blow-dry and chalking as part of a special package.

DIY Friday: Easy Ombre Nails

August 3, 2012 | 10:00 AM | Her | By Alanna Watson

OMG. Nails. The nail art trend has captivated us since its humble beginnings as just a few simple polkadots adorning ring finger enamel and has since catapulted to extreme proportions while simultaneously holding the number one spot as the most ridiculous use of time since the bedazzler. But hey, what can we say? We’re obsessed. We also love anything ombre (i.e: dip-dyed sweaters, jeans and supermodel hair), so when Free People’s blog, BLDG 25 posted this easy way to ombre your own nails, we couldn’t help but share. Just round up your two favorite shades, a sponge and a toothpick, follow the instructions on the website and you are on your way to having the most stylish nails in the office. People will be blue-faded-into-green with envy.

DIY Friday: The Purrfect Cat-Eye

July 27, 2012 | 9:25 AM | Her | By Alanna Watson

Finally! A beauty tutorial that you can actually do by yourself. Those crazy step-by-step guides on how to achieve the “perfect whatever” usually have us walking away from the mirror looking like Toddlers in Tiaras gone wrong, but that’s because they expect so much from us make-up challenged females. Thanks to Refinery 29 and this awesome video from a pretty cool chic who looks like a cross between Lana Del Rey and Kat Von D, the cat-eye you’ve been dreaming of  is not only doable, but easier than ever before. Why? Because Kat Del Rey doesn’t expect a flawless line to just flow from our fingers, she knows better and even says, point-blank, “you probably won’t be able to do it anyway.” With those low, low expectations, we are free from impossible standards and finally given the tutorial we deserve. Call it “make-up for dummies,”  but Lana Von D and Refinery 29 have saved us with this video. Watch for yourself and see your life change before your soon-to-be flawlessly lined eyes.

Look We’re Loving: Wild, Wild West

July 26, 2012 | 1:24 PM | Her | By Alanna Watson

Picture yourself walking through a pair of swinging saloon doors in a sepia toned world filled with cowboys, sporting women and boots with the spurs. While the look of the Old West has never really faded out of fashion – a fact that remains particularly true here in Arizona – this season’s looks from the South West are updated and fashion forward. Some of our favorite designers such as Isabel Marant and Hermès have taken the trend to the runway and our favorite, affordable lines like Free People, Levis and Dolce Vita have taken it to streets for all to enjoy. Check out the looks we wrangled up after the jump.  »READ MORE

DIY Friday: Summer Sandal Flair

July 6, 2012 | 11:00 AM | Her | By Kara Philp

Here in Arizona it feels like sandals are appropriate footwear 90-percent of the year. Of course that could mean monotony. Not anymore. Behold, the completely customizable do-it-yourself idea for any pair of sandals courtesy of Daily Candy and I Spy DIY Style.

Here’s all you will need: a pair of sandals (old or new), various colors of string, the tiniest bit of super glue and scissors.

To get started, wrap the the first color of string around a desired strap or piece of your sandal and tie in a knot. Continue wrapping the string to desired width. Knot it to the next color and repeat. Reinforce knots with dabs of superglue. For more detailed instructions, watch the video here.

Since the string isn’t glued directly to the sandal itself you risk nothing. Feel free to try this same trick over and over with different sandals, different types of string and different color combinations and patterns … that will keep you on your toes.

4th of July Essentials Part 3: The Shopping List

July 3, 2012 | 10:00 AM | Cocktail Recipes | By Kara Philp

Red, white and blue dipped strawberries are the perfect Summer treat for any 4th of July gathering. Photo courtesy of halfhourmeals.com.

It’s time to stop procrastinating and get busy prepping for that 4th of July gathering you’re hosting or attending. Since patriotic appetizers, drinks and party favors are so, well, patriotic and because it’s rude to show up empty-handed, we’ve taken the liberty (pun intended) of creating this holiday shopping list for you.

What to serve:

Half Hour Meals has compiled an exceptional list of recipes that pay tribute to the Red, White and Blue. Between the dessert ideas, the cocktail recipes, and the kid-friendly sweet treats you’re sure to find a uniquely edible way to salute to the USA this holiday. Don’t forget to keep these ideas tucked away for the Olympics later this Summer too.

What to buy:

It’s just not Independence Day without fireworks. Buying fireworks at tent stands and grocery stores is legal in Arizona; however, lighting them can be illegal depending on your city (as well as the date). Click here for more details.

The Grill Comb is not a grooming gadget, it’s a conversation piece. Save yourself the hassle of skewers this grilling season and get this multi-pronged grilling tool. Made from food-grade stainless steel, it’s reusable, dishwasher safe, and at a foot long, can handle plenty of food. Available at Uncrate.com for $11/2-pack.

What to wear:

No, not another commemorative Old Navy tee. We’re talking practical fashion for the triple digits. Here are some timelessly patriotic ideas, because, let’s face it, people love to rock the stars and stripes. For her and for him. Whatever your plans entail, don’t forget the lawn chairs, blankets, cooler and sun screen. Happy Independence Day.

Seems that every clothing company has thrown out some homage to the red, white and blue this season and we can’t help but notice how impossibly chic you can look while “theme” dressing. Whether you’re all for subtleties or ready to walk the streets in six-inch flag-adorned Litas, we have your guide to dressing up (or down) for Team America. »READ MORE

June 22, 2012 | 9:00 AM | Deals | By Maxfield Barker

Hey there, hot stuff. We all know that looking as good as you do is mostly just your natural beauty, but some things money can buy and the upkeep can get a little pricey. This is why we are pleased to share that Fuchsia Spa in Mesa is offering great summer deals to keep you looking your best on a budget. A one-stop-shop for all your beauty needs, Fuchsia is a full-service day spa that offers a refreshing twist from the norm. In other words, just the place to go to maintain such a flawless look

Custom Airbrush Tanning $17.50

We all know by now that tanning in AZ (or in general) is pretty stupid, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have that bronzed bod you’ve been coveting. Custom airbrush tanning allows you to choose the color you want with no orange streaks and, more importantly, no risk to your health.

Blow Outs $17.50

Fuchsia, being the only blow out bar in the Mesa and Gilbert area, is just the spot to make your hair ‘just been done’ fabulous without injuring your good arm by way of endless round brushing. Lasting up to a week (with the help of a little dry shampoo) blowouts provide extra volume in these dreadful summer days. It’s a great way to get ready for a girl’s night out on the town and not look like a train wreck the morning after.

Fuchsia Facelift Package $90

During July, Fuchsia will be offering its Fuchsia Facelift, that includes a Microdermabrasion, a facial,  a 2 layer eye-lift, and a micro-current in addition to a blow out for just $90.

These are just some of the deals going on, check out the full Fuchsia Service Menu and witness affordability for yourself. Call (480) 813-7465 to book your appointment. Oh, by the way, Fuchsia is the only full-service day spa that offers a membership program for only $59. Yeah, we thought you’d like that.

DIY Friday: Baseball Bracelet

June 15, 2012 | 9:05 AM | Her | By Alanna Watson

Celebrate America’s favorite pastime by inviting a little piece of patriotic history to your arm party. We found this DIY project on Pinterest by way of blog, Kitty Cotten, and to create your own leather accessory is both simple and cheap, just how we like it. Just find yourself an old baseball, cut  off the leather with a sharp exact-o-knife and pull the leather off the ball, slice around the stitching and then cut to your desired length while leaving the strings long. Then rebraid the stitching, tie off the ends and use a button to fasten for easy fastening. Then you are ready to eat peanuts and crackerjacks with your fancy hand worthy of the Great Bambino all summer long. Check out a pictorial tutorial here.

What We’re Loving: Pumped Up Kicks

June 7, 2012 | 1:00 PM | Her | By Alanna Watson

Consider this a continuation of last week’s Sporty Spice trend report because, my fashion-minded friends, our love for the sneaker wedge runs so deep, it deserves its own post. They have all the comfort of your favorite running shoes wrapped up with the style of fashion’s edgiest It girls and, despite their more athletic appearance, these bad boys go with everything. You know that feeling of surprise you get when you see someone in a feminine sundress paired with studded combat boots? Wearing a sneaker wedge is like that, but perhaps more appropriate for the, eh, warmer summer season. Inspire shock and awe with some of our favorite styles after the jump.  »READ MORE

Not Your Mother’s Neiman Marcus

June 4, 2012 | 10:59 AM | Her | By Alanna Watson

For most of us, a trip to Neiman Marcus means one of two things: 1. Someone you’re shopping with wants to go in there and purchase something you probably can’t afford. 2. They’re having an epic sale that allows you to score an amazing Alice + Olivia dress or a perfect pair of Theory pants for next to nothing. Well, prepare yourselves because that is the case no more.

After some major remodeling and a conceptual overhaul of the once slightly stuffy-feeling contemporary department, CUSP has officially arrived and the result is enough to make any fashionista swoon. The in-store boutique, which now encompasses nearly half of the store’s second level, is an amazing one-stop shop for all the latest designers and trends at varying price points that won’t drain your savings with a single swipe. The easy-to-shop and clearly labeled designer sections are accompanied by bold new decor, funkified fitting rooms and an accessories section featuring jewelry, shoes and handbags all curated for the savviest of shoppers. »READ MORE

Trend Report: Sporty Spice

May 31, 2012 | 10:00 AM | Her | By Alanna Watson

I’ll tell you what we want (what we really, really want) is to be able to walk out public dressed in the season’s “athletic” trend and not look like we just came from the gym. It’s cool that you workout, or whatever, but a post-sweat session shower is 100% necessary and that means so is changing your clothes. So how does one incorporate the sporty style into her wardrobe without looking like she could strike a downward dog pose at any moment? Allow us to help you out with that. Stick with one or two pieces from the trend like a great sneaker wedge or athletic-inspired tank top (Stella McCartney for Adidas, anyone?) in a single outfit. You can even take on the look by exchanging your regular tote for a super-cool convertible backpack. Check out some items we’d sprint a mile to have in our wardrobes after the jump.

What We’re Loving: The White Tee

May 24, 2012 | 10:00 AM | Her | By Alanna Watson

Summer style should be easy, effortless really. You should just be able to reach into your closet and pull out perfect sundresses in the most flattering cuts and patterns and then pair them with shoes that feel like clouds on your feet, yet still look runway ready (of course). Sadly, this is not the world in which we live. Truth is, when it’s this hot out, you want to throw on something you can really sweat in. We have an answer to your summer styling woes. While it’s no fashion revelation, the white tee is just the effortless essential piece you can wear with anything that is always in style. You can throw it on with a pair of shorts and a simple, brown belt or knot it at the waist and pair it with your favorite maxi skirt. You can even go oversized and wear it off the shoulder over your favorite dress for an updated take. Heck, wear a white tee any (or every) day the sun shines bright, hot and unbearable during an Arizona summer. We will applaud your creativity and commitment. Check out some basic ways to wear your white tee in our gallery after the jump.
