March 31, 2012 | 2:00 PM | LivingWell | By Maxfield Barker

As chosen by you, here are the most popular stories of ALL TIME aka last week, just in case you missed them.

March is Nutrition Month and with the Valley being health conscious, we wanted to bring you some valuable information that will help you LiveWell. Who would’ve thought that seeds would be the next big trend in the healthy eating market? Eating seeds not only provides you with an extra boost in your step but also supplies the vitamins and fiber your body ultimately needs. Thanks to Michelle Gorman, of BCBS’ Healthy Blue Services and with more than a decade of food science and nutrition experience, here’s a list of some healthy, delicious seeds. Let’s finish off Nutrition Month right by incorporating these six seeds into our diet.

1.   Hemp: A complete protein and contains all nine essential amino acids. It’s basically equivalent to eating an egg. Most incorporate hemp into their diet by making shakes or smoothies, or they simply sprinkle the seeds over fruit or a yogurt parfait.

2.   Wheat germ: High in folate, which is key for women of child-bearing age to fight off risks of birth defects such as spina bifida. Wheat germ can also be found in lots of yummy cereals such as granola. It’s tasty in cottage cheese too.

3.   Sunflower seeds: High in vitamin E and often acts as an antioxidant, fighting off wrinkles. Who knew sunflower seeds could perform as an anti-aging trick? Sunflower seeds also help fight heart disease.

4.   Pumpkin seeds: Contain phytosterils and help reduce bad cholesterol. These are loaded with the good healthy fats.

5.   Flax seeds: Extremely high in fiber and reduce constipation and bloating. They are also high in omega-3 too.

6.  Chia seed: Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, and they have among the highest antioxidant activity of any whole food, even more than fresh blueberries. And they also help keep the blood pressure and blood sugar under control.

Orange You Glad OJ is Safe?

March 19, 2012 | 3:30 PM | LivingWell | By Maxfield Barker

Gas prices are rising but the price of OJ is not. Hooray! A while ago Gizmodo reported that there was a spike in orange juice prices.

Back in January, some OJ was tainted with a fungicide and that combined with an unusually cold winter led to the presumed increase in prices. Hold on to your cojones, because this specific fungicide (carbendazim), is known to cause infertility and destroy testicles, in high doses. Wait, what?! That seems like a high price to pay.

Fear not, because a couple weeks later the government announced that OJ was A’okay. Here’s the thing, OJ prices were increasing even before the fungicide scare. This has a lot to do with the dwindling supply of oranges and the high price of production. So don’t worry, your favorite morning drink is still safe to enjoy, and delicious of course.

To celebrate the news, here are our top 5 places to enjoy freshly squeezed OJ.

1. La Grande Orange - 4410 North 40th Street | Phoenix, Airzona 85018

2. Windsor5223 North Central Avenue | Phoenix, Arizona 85012

3. Arcacia Cafe 3701 East Indian School Road | Phoenix, Arizona 85018

4. Orange Table7373 Scottsdale Mall Suite #6 | Scottsdale, Arizona 85251

5. The Daily Dose Grill - 4020 North Scottsdale Road Suite #101 | Scottsdale Arizona 85251

Cheater, Cheater, Arizona Skeezers

March 12, 2012 | 2:00 PM | LivingWell | By Staff

What is this Arizona?! A new report from the popular hook-up infidelity site AshleyMadison.com, ranks Arizona as #3 for membership of cheating spouses and unfaithful significant others. Website founder Noel Biderman recently told the Phoenix Business Journal that, “Phoenix’s transplant nature could have something to do with its high membership rate on the infidelity site.” What else could it be? What’s driving us Phoenicians to cheat and perhaps ultimately divorce?

Keith Berkshire, Cerfitified Specialist in Family Law at the Rose Law Group said, ”Given Arizona’s historically high divorce rate, it doesn’t surprise me that Phoenix is listed as having the third highest rate of cheating spouses in the county.” He continued,”When you add to that the significant downturn in the Arizona economy in the last few years, and the resulting financial stress that occurs from that downturn, it isn’t shocking that many people are tempted to cheat on their spouse or partner.”

Alright Arizonans. If you’re so stressed that you are thinking of straying, try a few of these stress relieving tips from Dr. Michael Yasinski of Yasinski Psychiatry, a boutique practice in the privacy of your own home:

1.  Get 10-15 minutes of sunshine each day.
2. Exercise. 20-30 minutes of cardio 3 times per week and hopefully some weight trainin which gives you an immediate endorphin “high.” And, long-term changes in brain chemicals involved in depression change for the positive with exercise over time.
3. Get out of the house at least once a day. Not necessarily with friends all the time (or a hookup from AshleyMadison.com), get out by yourself or with others. Just get out of the house to cheer up!
4. Find a purpose outside of the home life. Volunteer or get a job.
5. Lower your carb and sugar intake. Carbs can have a negative effect that lasts on chemicals involved in depression.
6. Limit the booze. Alcohol is a depressant, which could further your depressed state and lead to destructive behaviors.

Need some specific advise on family law or mental health care? Email Keith Berkshire of Rose Law Group at [email protected] and Dr. Michael Yasinski at [email protected] to make an in-home appointment with the doctor.

Competitive Zen: Are You a Poser?

March 5, 2012 | 2:30 PM | LivingWell | By Maxfield Barker

Yoga, as we all know and we here at DLT love, is the practice of self-discipline in order to achieve control of the body and mind, and to gain tranquility. Not only is Yoga a great workout, but also a great way to find peace in the busy life of the 21st century. It’s amazing how something as simple as holding a pose for an extended period of time can bring peace to mind.
When thinking of yogis and yoga, one wouldn’t associate them with the competitive world of sports. But a new craze is bringing yoga to the front lines of sport competition: competition yoga.

Back in January, Arizona Yoga hosted the 2012 Asana Championship, a competition devoted strictly to holding difficult poses. Yogis from all over the Valley competed against one another. But does the competition take away from what yoga is all about? »READ MORE

Have You Heard of Naked Yoga?

February 14, 2012 | 4:30 PM | LivingWell | By Hannah Hayes

Naked yoga may just sound like a sweatier version of regular yoga, but there’s much more to it than a lack of clothing. Proponents say it helps encourage total physical freedom, including freedom from inhibitions, the opinion of others, self-critical body image, and shame about the body. Down-dog sans yoga pants – sounds hot, right?

Yoga Undressed is a new project from trendsetting yoga/fitness/Pilates expert Jennifer Kriese. The series of four DVDs (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Duet) for women feature a flowing Tantric practice combining Kundalini and Hatha styles. Kriese wants Yoga Undressed to show how to honor the body in its most sacred, natural form and promote an enhanced awareness of and connection to the body. She says seeing and feeling the body as it stretches and moves from one pose to the next results in a more mindful, self-aware practice.

The DVDs will be released in early March and will be available here and on Amazon.

Nourish The Bode

January 16, 2012 | 2:30 PM | LivingWell | By Maxfield Barker

OneBode (pronounced ‘one body’) has a lot to be proud of. After only being in the game since 2006, this all-natural supplement company has grown substantially, sold internationally, and even picked up Steve Nash as their spokesperson.

Selling a variety of products like vitamins, minerals, protein powder, and probiotics, OneBode, unlike most of its competitors, uses only natural, plant-based ingredients. “We’re food and plant-based. The vitamins come from food and we’re really big into plant-based enzymes. We’re more on the holistic side as a supplement company,” Sean Loomer, co-founder of OneBode, said.

Actually, Nash, who is known for being environmentally conscience, approached OneBode to represent them. “He liked our products, our philosophy, and what we were doing. We’re always trying to promote and do as much environmentally good as we can,” Loomer added.

Because of Nash’s Canadian roots, OneBode sales have been rising from our neighbors to the north. Its ongoing dedication to customers includes making sure that the formulas and ingredients are based on the most up-to-date research available, according to the Tempe-based company’s website.

Even though the company has only been around for a hand full of years, they have set themselves apart from other supplement companies. OneBode’s products are clean compared to that of their competitors, who typically use synthetic ingredients in their products, Loomer said. “The brand continues to grow. We continue to educate people on taking vitamins that are from food and not synthetically created. We’re really trying to do things from nature.”
