Are You My Ride? UBB Widow Maker 1100 Mustang

May 15, 2012 | 12:55 PM | Are You My Ride? | By Maxfield Barker

The Ford Mustang has been the epitome of American muscle for over half a century. The UBB Widow Maker reinforces that sentiment, ten-fold. For a cool $135,000 you can purchase this 1100 hp beast. Topping at around 230 mph and with a 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds, it’s no wonder they call it the Widow Maker. The car is covered in carbon fiber body kit, keeping the weight down. The 19-inch black alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, Advan traction control, Recaro seats, and built-in laser jammers (awesome), are all icing on the cake. If you find yourself driving this monster of a machine, as the name suggests, promise us you’ll be careful?

Are You My Ride? Mercedes-Benz Style Coupe Concept

May 8, 2012 | 4:41 PM | Are You My Ride? | By Maxfield Barker

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we love a good Benz and especially if its a concept. We always want what we can’t have right? As you can see, there are some changes to the classic Benz look. The grill even appears to have to what looks like diamonds all over it, classy. This car is so aesthetically pleasing you can hardly take your eye off it. The interior is a bit different in this concept. A panoramic glass roof compliments the carbon fiber dash, white leather on the instrument panel, air vents that change color based on the selected temperature, neon green accents This amazing automobile with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine is pretty much ready for the road and of course the price is still to be determined. We recommend you start saving now.

Are You My Ride? Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Victoria Beckham...

April 24, 2012 | 3:00 PM | Are You My Ride? | By Maxfield Barker

Want to find a way to spice up your life? Every boy and every girl: spice up your life! Yes, we know those are Spice Girls lyrics straight out of the 90s, but don’t worry, there is a method to our madness. Victoria Beckham, formerly known as Posh Spice, has a version of Land Rover’s famous Range Rover, the Evoque Victoria Beckham Edition. Right off the bat you might notice that this new Range Rover is a bit smaller than its predecessors, especially the fact that is now a two-door. Just like the beautiful Victoria, this SUV is all about aesthetics. Twenty inch wheels, a matte-gray finish that compliments a glossy black top is easy on the eyes. The interior is just as elegant with baseball-style stitching, rose-gold switches on a piano black center console, and (of course) a matching 4-piece luggage set. This SUV is the epitome of class. With a price that’s TBA and with only 200 made world-wide coming out this October, these Range Rovers are going to fly off the lot.

Are You My Ride? 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

April 17, 2012 | 3:00 PM | Are You My Ride? | By Maxfield Barker

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. We love a brand new Benz, and though it’s a little on the large size, we still love the new G-Class. Does it look familiar? Well it should because this SUV has pretty much stayed the same shape for over three decades. That 2013 model stays true to its rugged ancestors while incorporating the latest technology, making it a must have (if you can afford the six figure sticker price). Along with the G550 model, the G-class will include  the G63 AMG model this year, after a year-long hiatus. With a standard 382 hp in the G55, the AMG model jumps up to 544hp. This SUV can go from 0-60 in just over 5 seconds, which is great for this behemoth. As far as technology is concerned, the G-class includes blind-spot monitoring, and updated Parktronic backup sensors and rearview camera. Oh and don’t worry, this Benz can hold its own in the wilderness. Yeah, we want one too.

Are You My Ride? 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

April 10, 2012 | 3:00 PM | Are You My Ride? | By Maxfield Barker

No one loves a nice Benz quite as much as us. The new SL65 is no exception. With a 6.0L V12 bit turbo engine, the Mercedes  has the potential to reach 621 hp, an impressive feat that is surely on top of its class. Zero to 60 in just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph, you can get moving pretty quick in this car. To cut down weight, the SL65 is made of an aluminum body and incorporates a new twin-blade grille, and of course has plenty of technology components like a roof that can go from light to dark with just the touch of a button and a heating system that goes all the way to your neck (not that we really need that in the Valley). The price is still to be determined, but we can imagine it costing a pretty penny.

120 Seconds: Tyrone Wells

April 6, 2012 | 12:30 PM | 120 Seconds | By Maxfield Barker

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, Tyrone Wells is a successful singer and songwriter, and his songs have been featured on hit TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Rescue Me, and One Tree Hill. He currently holds the number 1 spot on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart with his fifth (and latest) studio album Where We Meet. In 2010 he held the same position for three weeks with his EP Metal & Wood.

For this edition of 120 Seconds, we had the pleasure of speaking with Tyrone about life, music, food, and family. He’ll be in the Valley at the Crescent Ballroom on April 11. This is a show not to miss, for ticket info click here.

DLT:  How would you describe your music in less than five words?
Soulful, singer-songwriter, emotional, sometimes rocking, heart-felt, I just used way more than five words…

What are your two biggest inspirations?
That’s hard to answer because all of the songs are their own and inspired by different things. But if I was forced to answer, I keep circling around the themes of Love and God, which some would say are interchangeable, and some see as very separate.

Favorite part of the country/world to perform?
I always love performing for Southern California hometown crowds. NYC would be a close second – just because it’s New York.

Are You My Ride? BMW i8 Concept

April 3, 2012 | 3:00 PM | Are You My Ride? | By Maxfield Barker

If you think hybrid cars don’t have the ability to pack a punch then you’re sadly mistaken friend. The BMW i8 Concept is a force not to reckoned with. As part of BMW’s experimental hybrid line, just looking at this car suggests the word “experimental” is an understatement. The car utilizes a 131 hp engine to power the front wheels and a turbo-charged 231 hp gas-powered engine that powers the rear wheels (talk about hybrid). This i8 Concept does indeed pack a punch with 0-62 mph in just 5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mpg. And guess what? The car gets about 78 miles per gallon, perfect when gas prices are starting to top $4 a gallon. The price is still to be determined so in the mean time you can ogle the picture we’ve provided for you.

Worth Repeating: Seeds: The Next Big Trend

March 31, 2012 | 2:00 PM | LivingWell | By Maxfield Barker

As chosen by you, here are the most popular stories of ALL TIME aka last week, just in case you missed them.

March is Nutrition Month and with the Valley being health conscious, we wanted to bring you some valuable information that will help you LiveWell. Who would’ve thought that seeds would be the next big trend in the healthy eating market? Eating seeds not only provides you with an extra boost in your step but also supplies the vitamins and fiber your body ultimately needs. Thanks to Michelle Gorman, of BCBS’ Healthy Blue Services and with more than a decade of food science and nutrition experience, here’s a list of some healthy, delicious seeds. Let’s finish off Nutrition Month right by incorporating these six seeds into our diet.

1.   Hemp: A complete protein and contains all nine essential amino acids. It’s basically equivalent to eating an egg. Most incorporate hemp into their diet by making shakes or smoothies, or they simply sprinkle the seeds over fruit or a yogurt parfait.

2.   Wheat germ: High in folate, which is key for women of child-bearing age to fight off risks of birth defects such as spina bifida. Wheat germ can also be found in lots of yummy cereals such as granola. It’s tasty in cottage cheese too.

3.   Sunflower seeds: High in vitamin E and often acts as an antioxidant, fighting off wrinkles. Who knew sunflower seeds could perform as an anti-aging trick? Sunflower seeds also help fight heart disease.

4.   Pumpkin seeds: Contain phytosterils and help reduce bad cholesterol. These are loaded with the good healthy fats.

5.   Flax seeds: Extremely high in fiber and reduce constipation and bloating. They are also high in omega-3 too.

6.  Chia seed: Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, and they have among the highest antioxidant activity of any whole food, even more than fresh blueberries. And they also help keep the blood pressure and blood sugar under control.

120 Seconds: Al Maag of Avnet

March 30, 2012 | 1:30 PM | 120 Seconds | By Maxfield Barker

Al Maag isn’t your typical corporate bigwig. Straight out of Chicago, it’s no wonder that Al loves Chicago style hot dogs, beers, and sports. Serving as Avnet’s Chief Communications Officer, Al finds time to have fun while helping out others organizes softball tournament for charity, and is even in the works of creating a softball museum in Chicago.

We had the opportunity to toss the ball around will Al (only figuratively unfortunately) and asked about his love for the sport and why people should check out the Big Softball Tournament in Tempe on April 21.

DLT: Could you briefly explain what big ball softball is?
The game of softball started in 1887, 125 years ago when Yale and Harvard folks were waiting for the ticker tape scores of a football game…wrapped up a boxing glove and starting hitting with a broom stick. The 16 inch ball stayed large outdoors because the parks and schoolyards were so small and no money for gloves…every generation plays from grammar school to old timers.

What’s your favorite part of the sport?
Memories and creating new ones. It’s Chicago, my home town and playing 16 inch, eating Chicago food, and having fun brings a smile to my face. »READ MORE

Orange You Glad OJ is Safe?

March 19, 2012 | 3:30 PM | LivingWell | By Maxfield Barker

Gas prices are rising but the price of OJ is not. Hooray! A while ago Gizmodo reported that there was a spike in orange juice prices.

Back in January, some OJ was tainted with a fungicide and that combined with an unusually cold winter led to the presumed increase in prices. Hold on to your cojones, because this specific fungicide (carbendazim), is known to cause infertility and destroy testicles, in high doses. Wait, what?! That seems like a high price to pay.

Fear not, because a couple weeks later the government announced that OJ was A’okay. Here’s the thing, OJ prices were increasing even before the fungicide scare. This has a lot to do with the dwindling supply of oranges and the high price of production. So don’t worry, your favorite morning drink is still safe to enjoy, and delicious of course.

To celebrate the news, here are our top 5 places to enjoy freshly squeezed OJ.

1. La Grande Orange - 4410 North 40th Street | Phoenix, Airzona 85018

2. Windsor5223 North Central Avenue | Phoenix, Arizona 85012

3. Arcacia Cafe 3701 East Indian School Road | Phoenix, Arizona 85018

4. Orange Table7373 Scottsdale Mall Suite #6 | Scottsdale, Arizona 85251

5. The Daily Dose Grill - 4020 North Scottsdale Road Suite #101 | Scottsdale Arizona 85251

120 Seconds: Matty Helland

March 16, 2012 | 1:00 PM | 120 Seconds | By Maxfield Barker

On March 7, Devour Phoenix held its 3rd Annual Bartending Competition. Eleven bartenders from all over the Valley duked it out to claim the title of Top Bartender. With the help of Arroyo Vodka, these tenders of bar and mixologists concocted cocktails beyond our wildest imaginations. But of course there can be only one winner. Who claimed the prize? The Windsor’s own Matty Heland. Matty’s creation: Cocktail No. 9.

Finding inspiration from his Norwegian and Hispanic ancestry, Matty created a truly unique Southwest version of the classic White Russian (more on that later). Reflected in his responses from this 120 Seconds, Matty has an upbeat attitude, worthy of the Top Bartender title and plenty of tips.

Let’s get to know Matty and learn about his insight on bartending and bar etiquette. With everything he’s seen, we would totally read a book about his mishaps.

DLT: What was your inspiration for Cocktail No. 9?
My Norwegian/Hispanic heritage, growing up here in Arizona, and White Russians. Norwegians love their vodka, so I infused the spirit with some local ingredients, then paired it with a homemade, traditional Horchata.

Dear Phoenix, ‘Tis the Saison for Seven Wives

March 14, 2012 | 1:00 PM | Andrew From AZ | By Andrew From AZ

Welcome back Andrew, our favorite (yet reluctant) scenester, offering up his tasting notes on the flavor of the saison tapping now, ‘Seven Wives Saison’ by Sonoran Brewing. Read on, to find out where to drink up.

Dear Phoenix,
Arizona’s brewers have been growing both in number and in notoriety for years. Dozens of local watering holes from sports bars to high-end restaurants alike are offering local brews on tap or in the bottle. Arizona beer is finally reaching the point where it’s embraced, both in-state and nationally. It’s in this background that Sonoran Brewing, a well-respected Scottsdale-based brewhouse, kicked off its chef collaboration series in March of 2012, starting with the Seven Wives Saison.

This beer is the first saison made in Arizona. A saison is a beer that was originally made in a French-speaking region of Belgium, known as Wallonia. What primarily differentiates a saison from other light-bodied ales with medium alcohol content is the unique Belgian yeasts that ferment the mash and create a floral, “funky” flavor at the back of the taste. Brew-master Zach Schroeder used a mix of two slightly different farmhouse-style yeasts in this iteration. »READ MORE
