[Updated] DLT Crime Blotter: The Severed Arm

May 13, 2011 | 7:05 AM | News | By Staff

A former Tucson resident has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years probation for his role in a ghastly car crash that left a severed arm laying in the backseat of his SUV. An arm that the police later found in a dumpster after the driver threw it out and called 911 to report his car stolen. Full story below.

Here’s a another (gruesome) little story that seems to have slipped under the local radar screen. And once again, it involves the Old Pueblo. Yes, a former Tucson resident and Army soldier has been convicted of leaving the scene of a car crash in which a fellow enlisted man lost his arm. Oh, and the guilty man was also convicted of tampering with evidence after throwing the arm in a trash bin … after he found in his backseat the next morning.

Mesa Madness: Batman Fearing Druggies & Naked Cemetery Dancing

May 11, 2011 | 6:30 AM | Local | By Frank Johnson

Is there something in the water in the fine city of Mesa? First came the news of a 24-year-old woman arrested for dancing in the nude, in the middle of the day, inside a cemetery. Now AZ Central‘s reporting that a 22-year-old Mesa man was arrested after racing across several rooftops because he thought Batman was chasing him.

It all started on Friday when the chipper looking Kara Rene Mitchell was spotted dancing topless atop graves at the Mesa City Cemetery. And because why stop there, she eventually decided to shake her money-maker completely au naturel before commandeering a golf cart. Needless to say, she’s been charged with indecent exposure and (oddly) soliciting sex in public, says the Phx New Times.

We ♥ Tucson Part 2

May 5, 2011 | 8:10 AM | City Guides | By Staff

From deep-fried delights and frozen tipples, to John Dillinger and Dudley “Booger” Dawson, these are a few of our favorite (Tucson) things. Missed our original list, click here to learn why “You Can’t Buy Love” in the Old Pueblo.

Ask any Tucson resident about Lucky Wishbone, and more than likely they’ll start singing a silly little diddy about, “Chicken, shrimp and steakfingers, too … Good things are goin’, at Lucky Wishbone.” (Click here to hear the song.) That’s because this famed fried-chicken spot, which first opened in 1953, has become a local landmark, with eight locations across Greater Tucson. All of which raises a serious question: what the hell is a steakfinger? Think of it as fishsticks for landlubbers, a breaded and deep-fried hunk of round steak, like a chicken fried steak that made to eat on the go.

April 12, 2011 | 8:03 AM | Exhibits | By Staff

We miss Bob Ross. We miss his hair, his weird obsession with paint thinner (happiest time of the day was cleaning his brushes) and of course, painting “happy little trees” alongside the television. Fear not, for Bob is back with The Best of: The Joy of Painting. A step by step guide to 60 of his favorite (don’t they all look the same?) paintings, it’s a full color, high gloss, Bob-O-Thon. If only we hadn’t used all the paint thinner

And HOLY (BLEEP) do we have an update for you! Three words: Courteney Cox’s boyfriend.

Long story short (click here to read our earlier coverage), the cops say Redding was slain in a murder-for-hire plot involving a shady spinal surgeon, who was both a business associate of Redding’s father and her ex-boyfriend. Now, as police prepare to try Redding’s alleged killer, a 44-year old real estate agent who’s been described as a “female James Bond,” details about the horrific murder scene are starting to leak out.

A local woman pleaded guilty to shooting her ex-boyfriend/drug dealer while he sat in a hot tub outside his Scottsdale home. Yes, Morgan Leigh Adams (pictured) just copped to manslaughter in the shooting death of Dale Webber back in May 2009, according to CBS 5. Webber, whose body was found by his landscaper, had apparently been dead for several days before he was discovered dead from a single bullet wound.

Naked Drug Fiend Pulled From Gilbert Manhole

March 3, 2011 | 10:18 AM | News | By Frank Johnson

Well, here’s something you don’t see every day. A 32-year-old Gilbert man was pried out of a 40-foot sewer hole that he’d fled down to escape the cops. According the Arizona Republic, Eugene Gimzelberg (not pictured) was discovered after two passersby reported they heard someone screaming for help in a field north of Loop 202 and Higley Rd. The responding officers found the suspect “naked except for one shoe” and suffering from injuries sustained when he tumbled into the sewer hole.

Turns out Mr Gimzelberg had been (surprise, surprise) smoking PCP and marijuana as well as eating magic mushrooms, and had fled into the sewer when cops showed up earlier in response to reports of a suspicious man shambling around the neighborhood.

DLT Crime Blotter: Tunnel Tussle

February 23, 2011 | 9:18 AM | News | By Staff

Recently, Scoop Factory went deep beneath the streets of Phoenix as it explored the Camelback Pedestrian Underpass, a surprisingly beautiful tunnel connecting Biltmore Fashion Park with the cluster of high-rise offices, condos and hotels just across this busy street. However, we’ve got the sad story behind this stunning civic space, as well as how history seems to be repeating itself as city officials argue over how to connect two popular shopping centers on opposite sides of the Phoenix/Scottsdale border.

Hopefully, this latest shopping center squabble won’t also end with poor pedestrians being squashed by SUVs.

DLT Crime Blotter

Here’s a crazy story that seems to have slipped under the local radar. Pictured is Juliana Redding, a 21-year-old model/aspiring actress who was found murdered in her apartment in ritzy Santa Monica, CA more than two years ago. A former Tucson resident, Redding’s story probably would have been bigger news locally if the Old Pueblo still had a functioning newspaper. Now, however, the case is back in the headlines as the woman arrested in her murder has been linked to a disgruntled business associate of Redding’s father in a potential murder-for-hire plot.
