We All Need a Little More (Vintage) Junk in the Trunk

April 10, 2012 | 12:30 PM | Art & Entertainment | By Hannah Hayes

Vintage flea markets are a great reason to get away from the Valley. Driving to Pasadena to find a  perfectly aged armoire makes for a great road trip – but although the heat is rising, the price of gas right now just doesn’t make road trips as easy – or fun – as they used to be. Thankfully, someone got a clue and is bringing a vintage market here. At 10 a.m. May 5 at WestWorld, Valley antique/vintage/full-on junk obsessives will have a chance to do what they do best at Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market, a day of vintage treasure hunting with some good old fashioned giveaways, design inspiration and handmade vintage themed goods from a slew of vendors like Blue Eyed Owl, Chic Headbands, Strawberry Hedgehog, Winifred Street and many more. We don’t know about you, but we’re absolutely pining for a little more junk in our trunks, and we love that it won’t require a road trip!

Early bird admission is $8 for adults and lasts from 9 – 10 a.m. General admission is $4; children under 12 are free and admission is free after 3 p.m. A portion of ticket sales will benefit Young Life, a non-denominational Christian organization serving youth in Phoenix.

Getting a $13 Tattoo is EZ

April 10, 2012 | 7:55 AM | Deals | By Hannah Hayes

Instead of watching out for all ladders, black cats and broken mirrors this Friday the 13th, celebrate your fearlessness with a tattoo! EZ Tattoo definitely is: this Friday, the state-of-the-art Scottsdale shop will offer $13 tattoos (typically the size of a nickel) and buy one, get one for $13 piercings with free standard jewelry from noon to 11 p.m. The shop’s tattoo artists say the $13 marking adequately displays simple initials, small hearts or, if you’re feeling lucky, the number 13.

“It’s a great deal, no matter if you choose the piercing or the tattoo,” said EZ Tattoo owner Myron Larrabee. “Or you can choose both and walk out of our shop with a quality tattoo, two piercings, free jewelry and sea salt aftercare products. You can’t beat that.” For more information or to schedule an appointment, click here or call 480.941.8720.

Arrowhead Grill’s New West-Side Wine Club

April 9, 2012 | 4:30 PM | Eat & Drink | By Hannah Hayes

Glendale’s Arrowhead Grill will have a new, monthly West-Side Wine Club series to explore the history and evolution of the food and wine of different regions around the world, including Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and the United States. “Each month we will explore the wines of each region and the food with which it is historically paired,” says Chef Charles Wade Schwerd. “It’s going to be the closest thing to going there, and it’s going to be great fun.”

The Wine Club’s first meeting was March 31 and explored the great tastes of the “Noble Six,” or varieties of grapes that create the highest quality wines without blending: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Chef Schwerd celebrated this inaugural gathering by pairing these great wines with foods that bring out their distinct and complex flavors while exploring the basic concepts of wine grapes, the wine we get from them, and how to find and buy what you like.

The Club will meet at Arrowhead Grill the last Saturday of each month; cost is $20 per person and reservations are required. To RSVP, call (623) 566-2224 or click here.

Randomonium Celebrates Fifteen Years of Beer

April 9, 2012 | 9:30 AM | Art & Entertainment | By Hannah Hayes

Four Peaks Brewery will celebrate fifteen years of their one-of-a-kind craft beer with Randomonium, a day-long gala April 21 at Tempe Beach Park featuring music, great food, carnival rides, fireworks and of course, booze. (mostly beer – duh – but for the rest of you, margaritas and sangria will be flowing generously).  Entertainment will include performances by The Airborne Toxic Event, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights and more – but the fun doesn’t stop there. Grub will be provided by fourteen of the best food purveyors around, such as Short Leash Hotdogs, Gourmet Fry Bread, Hey Joe, Jamburritos, Sweet Republic, Mojo Bowl, T-licious LLC Mobile Foodtruck and Tom’s BBQ.

But wait – we said carnival rides and fireworks. Since the celebration is for all ages, there will be giant slides, obstacle courses, corn hole, a zip line, snow, and when the sun goes down, fireworks.

Sponsored by Vitamin Water, Fry’s Food Stores and Alliance Beverage, VIP tickets are $125 and feature covered seating, ten beers and food; general admission tickets are $40 through April 21 and can be purchased at any Fry’s location. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness and the Melonhead Foundation.

The Melonhead Foundation provides support to children with cancer and their families. The foundation offers financial support and a resource center to families in Arizona. Melonhead recently started a Camp Wannahealyah to provide a positive natural healing experience for pediatric cancer patients and their families, free of charge.

Keep it Local, Easter-Basket Style

April 7, 2012 | 10:10 AM | Local | By Hannah Hayes

It is finally spring and with the scent of orange blossoms always comes one of our favorite holidays, Easter. Even though we’re all adults here, we still enjoy a sweet, springy visit from the Easter bunny every Easter morning, even if it’s just in the form of a bag of jelly beans. Forget those huge store-bought, brand-name, four-foot-tall Easter baskets we find at the grocery store this year, though. Not only is the candy never our favorite kinds but we’re also a little leery of what we may find inside. Whether you’re the creative type and prefer to make your Easter baskets or if you’d just like an idea of what treat to give the hubby this year, DLT has got the answers. Follow the jump for a list of local favorites to pack a last-minute punch in those Easter baskets this year.

Scratch and Sniff Jeans at HUB Clothing

April 5, 2012 | 1:30 PM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

Most of us just want our jeans to be comfortable and make our butts look good (admit it), but after two weeks of wearing the same pair (again, just admit it), the scent of our favorite denim can be a little off-putting. We’ll wash them, we promise, but before that happens we could use a little air-freshening. Thankfully, Naked and Famous has just released scented jeans, which is not anywhere close to the way they smell after pulling them out of the bottom of the hamper. Available at HUB Clothing in Scottsdale, these Scratch and Sniff jeans actually aren’t as crazy as they sound, having simply been coated with raspberry-scented micro capsules that Naked and Famous swears lasts even after five washes (so…like a year…ok, kidding about that one). Scented jeans that smell like raspberry candy without the calories? We’ll take two.

Cool Gelato Italiano Gets Sweeter

April 4, 2012 | 3:00 PM | Eat & Drink | By Hannah Hayes

Via PreGel

Cool Gelato Italiano is bringing Scottsdale even more of that Italian goodness with a traditional Gianduiotto-flavored gelato. The bon bon-style chocolate treat is an Italian favorite and will be available Easter Sunday.

The Italian chocolate is shaped like an upturned boat and is a flavorful mixture of cocoa, sugar and hazelnut, the flavor of which is the secret to its famous taste, as they are hazelnuts only grown in the Piedmont region of Italy.

Cool Gelato Italiano was opened in February by an Italian husband-and-wife duo, along with Italy’s champion gelato artisan. The shop, which is located behind the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts, features twenty flavors that change every day.

Do the KIND Thing

April 2, 2012 | 4:30 PM | News | By Hannah Hayes

Each month, Do the KIND Thing challenges residents of a certain city to go out and do one act of kindness – with the promise that if enough people sign up to do so at this website, the KIND organization will pay forward their benevolence by giving back to a group of people in need.

This April, if enough Phoenix residents pledge to send a note of thanks to any educator they know (a mentor, a teacher, or even a wise friend) – KIND will deliver text books to hundreds of local children battling serious illnesses at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The delivery is aimed at bringing the gift of learning to these children who are not well enough to attend school with their peers.

Tee Off with The Vasters

April 2, 2012 | 9:30 AM | Local | By Hannah Hayes

This concept sounds a little crazy, but it might actually be genius. For fathers not planning to have any more children and who’d like a little time off to watch the Master’s this week, vasectomies are the newest way to grab some free time. At least, that’s what we’ve heard; in March, a Houston father of four decided March Madness was the perfect time to have the procedure. Now come April, the brilliance of his decision has caught on, even here in the Valley.

During the Master’s Golf Tournament, local urologists, Dr. Al Borhan and Dr. Mark Hong of Affiliated Urologists will host “The Vasters,” encouraging Valley men to get a vasectomy and enjoy a three-t0-four day recovery vacation, while enjoying the return of Tiger Woods.

Each patient will also receive two free golf balls and a chance to win free rounds of golf at two Valley golf courses. Procedures much be scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to participate. To schedule your appointment, click here.

Liposonix Readies You For Summer

April 2, 2012 | 7:55 AM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

The weather is warming up, but are you ready to show some skin? If you’re like us, you may need a little help. Liposonix, a revolutionary procedure from Susan Van Dyke, M.D. of Van Dyke Laser & Skin in Scottsdale. With ten years of developmental research, the FDA-approved, non-surgical, non-invasive procedure uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy (HIFU) to permanently destroy fat cells, giving patients the ultimate convenience of one treatment, in one hour, becoming one size smaller. When the ultrasound is targeted on problem areas, it will permanently eradicate fat around the waistline without surgery or harm to the outer skin layer. The fat is removed through the body’s natural healing process. In approximately 8 to 12 weeks, the fat becomes completely metabolized, leaving you with a thinner, more contoured waistline without having to go under the knife.

We love our fruity drinks and chocolate martinis but sometimes a simple, classy and super fresh cocktail is the refreshing break our weekend needs. Found at Scottsdale’s Zona Hotel and Suites, this weekend’s libation – with its fusion of gin, tonic, prosecco and fresh rosemary – is organic, invigorating and just plain delicious. We’ll take two, but only because of the taste, right?

Ingredients
Fresh rosemary
Juice of half a lime
2 oz of High spirits Gin
Splash of Tonic
Splash of Bisol “Jeio” Prosecco

Preparation
Muddle rosemary. Add lime juice, gin and ice. Shake vigorously and pour into chilled martini glass. Add a splash of tonic and Bisol prosecco; garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

Cattle Track Couture Commemorates Arizona Pioneer

March 29, 2012 | 4:30 PM | Art & Entertainment | By Hannah Hayes

If you’ve never heard of Rachael Ellis, it’s time to review your Arizona history. The wife of Arizona pioneer George Ellis, who in 1936 purchased a property near the Arizona Canal that grew into a haven for art and artists called Cattle Track Arts Compound, Rachael Ellis was a multi-talented pioneer woman, raising greyhounds with her husband, running her home, teaching, playing the violin and making boots for children. Among other things, she sewed, designing and revamping beautiful articles of clothing for her daughter Janie as well as costumes for the theater company she ran with Janie until the 2000’s.

Now through April 30 in an event that celebrates Arizona’s 100th birthday, a special exhibit highlighting these masterful pieces (and the work of a Valley forerunner) is on display at Cattle Track Arts Compound in Scottsdale. In Cattle Track Couture, Janie exhibits over fifty gorgeous, multi-hued ensembles, outerwear, dresses, and vests Rachael stitched over the years from several luxurious fabrics. In addition, a handsome array of Victorian attire that Rachael created or renewed for various occasions at her home will also be exhibited.

Presented with a coffee-table book titled Cattle Track Couture – Fashion by Rachael Ellis,  the show and the tome is perhaps one of the best tributes to Arizona history and one of the rarest, most comprehensive celebrations of Arizona’s centennial yet.  Peek into this timeless demonstration and visit an Arizona treasure  10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday through April 30. For more information, click here or email [email protected] to reserve viewings for private parties.

The Look! Local: Polka Dots from Pink House

March 29, 2012 | 12:30 PM | Her | By Hannah Hayes

I have spent my adult years with an aversion to every overly-cute form polka dots adopt. Too cute for me, I am enamored with prints and even stripes, but no dots. This was, of course, until recently, when I sauntered into Glendale retailer Pink House Boutique and encountered a breath of fresh (polka-dotted) air.

Glendale’s stylish storeroom sells vintage entities, clothing, accessories and furniture, much of it locally produced. My gem is a sheer, red-polka-dotted black blouse – an example of the shop’s modern take on classic womenswear. There is nothing saccharine about the blouse’s hot hues or sensuous fabric, and though it is rather formal, it is loose and relaxed. Flawless with pencil skirts as well as jeans, I am thrilled to wear this fashion-forward find out on the town. At a price of $22, Pink House’s feminine number is a charming local find.
