Hometown Low Down: This Week in Valley Media

April 6, 2012 | 11:00 AM | Art & Entertainment | By Alanna Watson

Hello all you Weekend Warriors. It’s finally Friday and that means it’s time to loosen that tie or kick off those heels (or both, we don’t judge) and relax. If you want to get the most out of your free days, you’ve come to the right place. Check it all out in this week’s hometown low down:

We all know there’s enough douchy bars in Old Town to satisfy the Pauly D’s of the world, but a good-time, non-threatening dive bar is slightly harder to come by in the metro area. You want to go to a place where everybody knows your name… and maybe a place where they don’t routinely play “Sweet Caroline” when the clock strikes 1 am. Am I right? Jackalope Ranch has rounded up the Ten Favorite Dive Bars in Greater Phoenix so you can test the waters and find the one that really feels like home. Take a gander at the truly dive-y joints they’ve rounded up, you’ll be surprised at just how under the radar you can fly.

Okay ladies, you’ve just lost your heels under your coffee table and are uttering the nightly “never again”, but we have an idea of how you can appreciate the “art” of shoes without actually wearing them. Downtown Phoenix Journal recently reported on a new downtown gallery’s debut collection called  “Inspired Soles.” The art show and silent auction, featuring dozens of pairs of stiletto shoes designed by various artists, kicks off tonight at 6:30 pm at the 6th Avenue Gallery ready for the First Friday crowds. You can enjoy the work and bid on your favorites, you know, if you’re into the whole “beauty is pain” thing.

So, if you plan on hitting up your favorite farmer’s market this weekend, we applaud you. Eating local and organic is a great way to help the economy, keep the hometown boys in business and stay healthy. If you are weary of trying fruits from a stand and not in a unnaturally shiny state, Locallily has divulged the deets on what 10 foods you should look for when searching through the endless stands.
