The second performance of the Arizona Opera‘s 2011-2012 season is putting a classic tale of love and lust in a modern setting and will be sure to turn the heads of opera purists and new fans alike.
The company will be performing Charles Gounod’s “Faust,” a French opera that has been an audience-favorite since its debut in 1859. The opera tells the tale of a man who sells his soul to the Devil for earthly pleasures and the consequences that deal brings. The twist in this production is that director Bernard Uzan is setting the tale in current times with the intent of making the story more relevant to 21st-century audiences. Such changes include substituting an urban nightclub for a 16th-century village fair, while showing that the story resonates no matter the time or setting. Sung in French with English surtitles. Showing in both Phoenix and Tucson.
