Ahh, the teenage years. Chances are when you look back on this time of your life, your best friend is in most of your memories. The time you ditched class, the time you dyed your hair purple, the time you hated your parents, all of these quintessential teenage milestones would be really hard to get through without the Robin to your Batman. This is why we are excited to share with you the opportunity to hear a lecture from photographer Andrea Modica at the Phoenix Art Museum’s Meet the Artist series October 22 at 2:00 p.m.
The contemporary photographer will be talking about her recent series of teenage portraits entitled “Best Friends.” The photographs are real, raw and manage to successfully convey the essence of the teenage spirit. In an interview with Dark Cloth Diaries, Modica talked about the year and a half project and its conception at a high school in Connecticut.
“I initially attempted to make single portraits. However, the student’s best friend was often nearby. This resulted in a small collection of photographs of pairs of high school students,” Modica said. Afterward, she was given a grant to do a six month residency in Modena, Italy where the majority of the series was taken. You can see more of the amazing photographs here and be sure to head on down to the Phoenix Art Museum to hear the full scoop on this talented artists’ work.
