Home Sexy Home

September 27, 2011 | 11:45 AM | Home & Design | By Tierra Wilson

Some homes are just that, a house…3 bedroom 1 bath located in “Blah Blah Neighborhood.” But some homes are sexy, they have clean and sleek pools, modern and hip furnishings and stunning architecture. At $2,515,000, the modern masterpiece by William Cody & Al Beadle located 6969 N. Little Tatum Boulevard in Paradise Valley, is one of those sexy and suave dwellings.

This 4,450 square foot 3 bedroom 3.5 bathroom home was pegged “Mid-Century made Modern.” However, the sexiness comes from the steel flooring, floor to ceiling windows, views of Camelback Mountain, stainless steel appliances, luxury wine room, see-through car garage and the AH-MAZING outdoor pool and patio area. This home is so sexy that we can easily picture James Bond vacationing here or maybe Ashton Kutcher throwing an exclusive house soiree.

If you want to call this modern masterpiece “Home Sexy Home” check out the full gallery captured by Howard Kuflik or contact John Todd Simpson at Realty USA South for a showing.

Scottish Salmon Recipe

September 26, 2011 | 2:00 PM | Eat & Drink | By Staff

Looking for something tasty to make at home this week? Try the unique, healthy flavors of this Shetland Scottish Salmon recipe using our favorite new carb, quinoa. The following recipe courtesy of Chef Akos Szabo at Top of the Rock Restaurant at the Tempe Buttes Resort.

Ingredients
2 ea, 8 oz pcs of Shetland Scottish Salmon (or salmon of choice)
8 oz red quinoa
4 oz Fossil Creek Goats Milk Yogurt
1 oz extra virgin olive oil
½ tsp vanilla salt
½ tsp ground szechwan peppercorn
10 Castelvetrano olives (or olive of your choice)
2 cups vegetable stock (or any stock of choice)
1 cup small diced english cucumber
1 ea carrot
1 ea celery rib (reserve celery leaves for garnish)
1 ea bay leaf
1 tbsp maldon sea salt
1 ea grapefruit
1 tsp grapefruit zest
3 ea green onions (scallions)

Preparation
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

In a small sauce pan, make vegetable stock by placing green onions, carrot, celery, bay leaf and half of the maldon salt with 4 cups of water. Bring liquid to a quick boil and then simmer for 15 minutes.

In a small baking pan, place red quinoa in oven for 10-15 minutes until quinoa is lightly toasted. Add the  toasted quinoa to the vegetable stock, cover, and continue to simmer till quinoa is fully bloomed and tender.

While quinoa is cooking, in a small mixing bowl, mix yogurt, diced cucumber, grapefruit zest and half vanilla salt. Refrigerate and reserve mixture for later.

Cut away all the skin of grapefruit exposing the flesh. With a small paring knife, cut out segments of grapefruit and set aside in a small bowl for garnish. If your choice of olive has not been pitted, press the olives with palm of your hand and crush the olive exposing the pit and remove. Set aside.

Season both pieces of salmon on both sides with salt and pink peppercorn. Heat a medium sauté pan on high. When hot, add half tsp of olive oil and gently place the salmon flesh side down in pan and cook till flesh is golden brown. Flip fish over and place in 400 degree oven and cook to desired temperature.

To finish, scoop warm quinoa on plate. Top with pan seared salmon. To garnish, top salmon with cucumber yogurt, grapefruit segments, crushed olives, remaining vanilla salt and celery leaves. Drizzle remaining olive oil and serve.

Snack Attack

September 26, 2011 | 12:00 PM | Eat & Drink | By Alanna Watson

A recent article in the Washington Post suggested an entire revamp of your kids after school snack options, but after reading the healthy alternatives to pop-tarts to shove in our own pie holes, we  found this list one worth sharing for kids of all ages. Whether it’s after school or after work, hunger can be overwhelming after an exhausting day, so why not reach for something easy, nutritious and actually good tasting. Opting for almond butter over peanut butter and dried fruit over fruit roll-ups seems like a no brainer, but sometimes, it’s nice to have a little reminder. Read the list from Jeniffer LaRue Huget after the jump.  »READ MORE

Released in early July, Washed Out’s first studio album, Within and Without, is the perfect soundtrack for fall. No, our season identification isn’t off kilter, we just feel the soothing, chillwave sounds are more in tune with the changing of the season. That and this newly released video for ‘Amor Fati’ just seems to scream ‘flannel’. Enjoy.

Lock Up Your Loved One

September 26, 2011 | 9:45 AM | Art & Entertainment | By Staff

Love. Amour. Liefde. Sayang. Meil. A kiss. A hug. A smile. A note… So many ways to “love.” But nothing says love like locking up your loved one at Fascinations this week with the “Lock Your Love” campaign to benefit Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Arizona.

It’s that time again. The courses keep coming, the desserts are delectably a-plenty and the wine is never-ending. Arizona Restaurant Week is in full swing, and somehow in between the marathon of meals and late-night noshing we managed to grab a few words with the namesake behind one of the Valley’s newest eateries: Justin Beckett.

Worth Repeating: Spinning Reels

September 25, 2011 | 10:00 AM | Art & Entertainment | By Chad Hays

As chosen by you, here are the most popular stories of ALL TIME (aka last week) just in case you missed it.

The Scottsdale International Film Festivalwill be spinning its reels once again Sept. 30 – Oct. 4. This year’s fest will be featuring 36 films from 27 countries, ranging from Hollywood premieres to indie art house flicks.

Festival executive director Amy Ettinger gives us the lowdown on this year’s can’t-miss movies, the fest’s new venue and who she’d like to see play her on the big screen. And find out how to win 2 tickets to Sundance Winner “Like Crazy” after her interview:

DLT: How long have you been with the festival organization?
Amy: I am the founder of the Festival and the Executive Director making my association with the organization 11 years and counting.

What inspired you to get involved/start the Scottsdale Film Festival?
There was an opportunity to bring more global film to the Valley. Having been raised in Chicago, I was consistently afforded the luxury of seeing foreign film. I knew that there were many more people like myself living here who would go to a Festival if it featured foreign film. Honestly, it was a very simple thought process to get from point A to point B in dreaming up the Festival. The actual execution of the event is where the real story come to light. We can save that one for another conversation. However, let me reassure your readers that there are plenty of American Indie films, English language films, and studio premieres for those who shy away from subtitles.

What films are you most excited about this year?
All of them. What I will say is that I recommend that people try to see 3, Aftershock, Hermano, Oxygen, Pure and Transfer.

Weekend Guide: Beer, Boats & Bottles

September 23, 2011 | 9:45 AM | Art & Entertainment | By Chad Hays

Whether you like wings, boats, beer or ballet, there is likely an event you’ll enjoy going down in the Valley this weekend.

It’s still September, but you can get the best part of October started early at Saturday’s Downtown Chandler Oktoberfest hosted by Santan Brewing Company. Be sure to try a pint of their Devil’s Ale while jamming out to bands like Lit.

Summer may be officially over, but it’s not the end of the music festival season. Head to Lake Powell for the Powellapalloza Beach Party. With sunny temps in the 80s, cold cocktails and live music from bands like Slightly Stoopid, it sounds like a road trip worth taking.

Fans of fermented grapes will want to strap on their walkin’ boots and head to Downtown Phoenix for the 4th Urban Wine Walk. Start things off at DLT-fave Phoenix Public Market and snag one of their free gift bags and a map of participating restaurants, such as Arrogant Butcher and Kincaid’s. Participating restaurants will be offering a minimum of three wine samples plus bites from the kitchen, all for $2-4.

Regardless of what you’re doing this weekend, when you’re ready to grub, check out this list of best wings in the Valley from our partners at Yelp. From JT’s to Teakwoods and Half Moon to Hungry Monk, Yelp has the skinny on the most popular wing spots in town. Once you pick a spot, the only question left is “BBQ or Buffalo?”
