BK Goes Healthy; Kills Its King

August 22, 2011 | 2:00 PM | Eat & Drink | By Chad Hays

When a fast-food burger with 1400 mg of sodium and 90% of your daily saturated fat headlines a company’s “healthy” makeover, then we think America’s healthy-eating movement may have jumped the shark.

In an attempt to boost sales, USA Today reports Burger King (BK) is looking to drive its latest campaign away from teens, aiming for a more health-conscious crowd: your momma. After testing the newest California Whopper, with guacamole, bacon and swiss, the company “is latching onto the all-critical fresh-and-healthy-food factor” nation-wide. Let’s see, if a bacon, swiss and guacamole burger doesn’t get the Whole Foods demographic into their drive-thru lanes, we don’t know what will. Just look at the picture. Makes you want to drop that kale salad and head straight to your nearest BK after yoga, no?

Besides trying to convince us that adding avocados to a greasy burger makes it healthy and fresh, BK is also overhauling their advertising campaign by ridding the world of the nightmare-inducing King character. He may be off our TV screens, but he’ll haunt our dreams forever.
