We were going to theme this week’s Chow Down all things red, white and blue in honor of the rapidly approaching holiday (like these Patriotic Pops from Honey Moon Sweets pictured), but then we decided: what’s more American than a vast array of foods from all over the globe, amazing deals on where to spend your happiest hour and a good, stiff cocktail? Nothing, right? With that in mind, here’s a redux of this week’s happenings in our favorite food blogs:
In the interest of getting straight to the point, the point being alcohol consumption, EaterAZ flagged down one of Tempe’s simplest happy hours at Canteen Modern Tequila Bar. Now, what I mean by “simple” is the one with the least amount of math involved to figure out what your bill will be and, for Canteen, this means half off. Just a simple divide by two situation here. Yep, from 4:00-6:00 pm everyday you can get half off “just about everything you can drink and a pretty good selection of menu items” AND half off tequila. Yeah, you can drink the real good stuff, the stuff you wish you could buy to impress random people during regular drinking hours, for just half of its ridiculous bar mark up. And this is not just a singular happy hour, it’s two so you can enjoy every sip twice as long for half the price.
The Fourth of July Cake Pops are unbelievably sweet, but there was something else that caught our eye this week on Chow Bella’s excessive (but appreciated) Valley food coverage: Paella. This traditional Spanish recipes probably has thousands of variations, dozens of which will be taken to the National Paella Cook Off in Dallas. This will include this recipe from Chef Sam Murillo of Orange Sky at Talking Stick Resort. You can get the recipe for the Southwestern Paella with Cilantro Crema here. It sounds like the perfect flavor to add a little kick to your traditional American cook out this weekend.
Michele Laudig’s new food and lifestyle blog is tearing it up with consistent, informative updates. We are especially loving that her food artwork (pictured) is back, as it shows a different, creative side to the famed valley food aficionado. Our favorite post this past week is one detailing the new(ish) downtown digs, FilmBar and Rum Bar. Culture, craft beers and amazing rum concoctions? These sound like places we want to be. Good thing they are within walking distance of each other…and the the light rail.
To wrap up this eclectic food blog coverage? JuxtaPalate posted a video on How to Make a Corpse Reviver #2. This may be handy come Tuesday when your lifeless body needs a little pick me up before work after your Independence Day celebrations.
Until next week, my friends.
