Local Lily’s A Summer That Doesn’t Suck: Mesa Edition

June 21, 2011 | 11:54 AM | City Guides | By Staff

Check back weekly as the lovely ladies of Local Lily give us tips on how to make your AZ summer an enjoyable one. This week? How to stay cool in Mesa.

Be a tourist in a part of The Valley you might not know and head to Main Street in downtown Mesa to discover  museums, public art,  restaurants and live stage performances. And it goes beyond entertainment to shopping and living in specialty shops, salons, coffee shops to yoga, art and music.  And Locallilly.com has a giveaway to pay for your day in downtown  Mesa. More details after the jump.

If you’ve got kids, get them out of the house and keep their brains active at The Arizona Museum of Natural History (just off Main).  Exhibits include LIFE SIZE dinosaur models and an impressive collection of fossils, focusing on Arizona and the Southwest from 4.5 billion years ago to the present.   And younger kiddos will enjoy the Arizona Museum for Youth nearby, featuring visually stimulating exhibitions and FUNtastic Art! a semi-permanent art activity space (appropriate for ages 5 – 10).  The Mesa Arts Center just down the street has gotten quite a bit of attention (it attracts performers you would have assumed to find in downtown Phoenix) with its 5 galleries and creative classes for all ages.

It may be too warm to picnic in the park so the next best thing (or better?) is Urban Picnic, bringing the outdoors in with a fresh (& kid friendly) space and delicious menu. The pressed Nutella sandwich or homemade mac-n-cheese are faves.  If your palate is a bit more sophisticated (not that we don’t love Nutella),  try the goat cheese and grilled veggie or prosciutto and fig jam sandwich.

Mystic Paper, across the street from Domestic Bliss and Found, are 3 specialty shops we happen to find ourselves browsing in often. Take a craft class, pick up something to brighten your home or a find a seasonal dress.

And its all locally owned!
