Incredibly intricate yet still whimsical, we’re big fans of Mystic Pieces, the new jewelry line created local artist, Shelly Brooks. Plus, they make the perfect gift for that steampunk aficionado in your life. (What’s a steampunk? Read on)
Brooks, who lost her job as an advertising exec about a year ago, already had a back-up plan in place. She’d started selling jewelry a year prior on Etsy, and already had a few local boutiques featuring her work, including Paris Envy, Work of Artists, Evermore Nevermore, and Level 9 Gallery. So she simply turned Mystic Pieces into a full-time gig.
Best described as Steampunk, her jewelry mixes cast-off mechanical pieces with more organic animal imagery. Never heard of Steampunk? Well, think of it as a geeky quirky trip through the Industrial Revolution, with a bit of the Wild Wild West technology and last year’s Sherlock Holmes movie (love you Robert Downey Jr.) thrown in to boot.
Through the use of social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook and joining sites/forums dedicated to Steampunk, Brooks has carved out a cult following. She will be kept busy this Fall with 15 shows, two of which include the Annual Indian School Corridor event on Nov 7 and the Tempe Festival of the Arts Dec 3-5. (See you there).
