Oh happy day for foodies in the far East Valley. It looks like both Postino Wine Cafe and Barrio Cafe will be opening new locations next to Liberty Market in Gilbert’s Heritage District.
Created by the husband and wife team, Kris and Craig DeMarco, Postino has been an immediate smash hit since it opened inside a remodeled Post Office some 11 years ago. More recently, the couple opened a second location inside the former Katz Deli in Uptown Phoenix, as well as both a gastro-pub and an old timey ice cream shop just across Central Avenue.
Barrio Cafe, meanwhile, has been both a critical and popular favorite since 2002, thanks to chef Silvana Salcido Esparza’s modern take on Latin American classics.
No wonder why she’s been nominated for the prestigious James Beard ‘Best Chef’ Award for the past two years in a row.
Back in Gilbert, Liberty Market is the new-old kid on the block. Originally founded in 1935 (back when Gilbert had a population of 600 people), this longtime retail store with a small lunch counter was transformed into a slow-food sanctuary back in 2008. Combined with the area’s brick-lined charm, and Liberty’s become a must-eat for even jaded Scottsdalites such as Eric Eats Out.
