Bikers, Baseball & Butterflies: March Madness Lives

March 28, 2011 | 9:01 AM | Art & Entertainment | By Staff

Just because the Wildcats are out of the big basketball tourney, doesn’t mean it’s the end of March Madness. Get out and enjoy the wonderful Spring weather with these funky, floral and film-focused events. (Meanwhile, UofA fans can drown your sorrows by watching this clip of a coach Sean Miller appearing on the Johnny Carson show as a 12-year-old dribbling phenom.)

Riding into town later this week, get your fill of badass bikes (and 1980s hair bands) at the 15th annual Arizona Bike Week. Officially kick-starting on Wednesday, March 30, (pre-party events are going on now) if you’ve ever pictured yourself cruisin’ down Route 66 in a Harley while everyone around you drools with envy, Bike Week is for you. (Besides, any event sponsored by Jägermeister and featuring performances by 80s rockers, Warrant & Skid Row has got to be a good time.) Burn rubber at WestWorld of Scottsdale and events Valley-wide March 30 – April 3.

Spring Butterfly Exhibit – Nothing says “Spring” like caterpillars crawling out of their cocoons to become beautiful butterflies. Sure, it sounds cliche, but celebrate the new season by fluttering over to Desert Botanical Gardens from now until May 5.

Spring Training – Due to beautiful weather and the work force’s overwhelming desire to ditch work and bask in the equally glorious rays that inexplicably radiate from the perfect combination of beer and baseball, Spring Training is back and better than ever with a new combined D-Backs/Rockies facility to add to the Cactus League mix. Cheap tickets and not-so-cheap beverages await through March 29.

Phoenix Film Festival – Making the final March cut, the Phoenix Film Festival is happening through April 7 at Harkins Scottsdale 101. Celebrate the art of Independent Film with documentaries, animated flicks, feature films and shorts while supporting a great non-profit organization.
