For years, we’ve been hearing about a tiny cafe with an outsized reputation. A little mom and pop shop with a top-notch bill of fare and a charmingly cozy vibe. And for years we’ve made excuses for not going there. But this weekend we finally dropped by Bertha’s Cafe at 32nd St. and Indian School, and now we are OBSESSED!
Oh my goodness, forget the cutsey, art-filled decor and the smiling staff led by owner, Beth Goldwater. This is home to some of the freshest, most flavorful sandwiches, soups and salads in the Valley. We dare you to try the Brioche Egg Sandwich (soft baked eggs topped with thick-cut bacon, peppery arugula, bold pesto and melty parmesan cheese) and not declare it the best breakfast sandwich you’ve ever had. (Sorry LGO Commuter, time to move on down the bench).
However, no visit here is complete without a taste of Bertha’s house-baked delights. A self-confessed bake-o-holic, who whipped up her first round of cookies on an Easy-Bake Oven, Goldwater handcrafts an ever-changing menu of pastries, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies and even gorgeous mini cupcakes (which at $.75 a pop might be the best bargain in town). Open for breakfast and lunch six days a week, now we just need to figure out where to eat on Sundays.
