As chosen by you, here are the most popular stories OF ALL TIME (aka last week). Just in case you missed it.
For decades, they Valley has held the unusual distinction of being the largest metropolitan area in the US without a major theme park. Now, one company hopes to change that by building a year-round winter wonderland where Valley residents can sled and even have a snowball fight in the dead of summer.
Named Catalyst Land Holdings, this investment group is targeting a patch of land right next to this old city dump (wee!) to create “the country’s first indoor snow play zone,” AZ Central reports. Named “Freeze Zone,” it will be based on similar indoor snow parks already operating in Japan and Dubai (pictured at right), where you can actually ski and snowboard in the middle of the Arabian desert.
Then again, considering that about 20 of these awesome-sounding proposals have come and gone since the Valley’s last true theme park closed in the early 1980s, we’re not going to start waxing our skis just yet. (Yes, skis. Look them up you crazy snowboarding kids.)
In fact, no less than three AZ theme parks are still molding on the drawing boards, including one each in west Phoenix and near the Grand Canyon in Williams, as well as an $800M Rock and Roll-themed park planned for Eloy, AZ. Meanwhile, Mesa residents are still waiting for the first shovel of dirt to be turned on the proposed Mesa Waveyard project that’s supposed to open next summer.
