Arizona Arts Congress: How is The State Doing With The Arts [Phx New Times]
So You Think You Can Step Up and Stomp America’s Best Dance Crew? Yeah, that would totally be our favorite show, too. But in the interest of stepping away from the boob tube and experiencing life outside the confines of your living room, here is a great opportunity to watch some very talented people get jiggy with it.
Epik Dance Company will be performing Common Ground at The Herberger Theater in Downtown Phoenix February 17-19. Combining contemporary, jazz, hip hop and breaking among other styles into one cohesive piece in order to showcase the dancers diversity and vision, Common Ground aims to piece together a puzzle of people through movement. Chances are they are going to do it with lots of back flips, extreme flexibility and some sweet beats. Check out a video of what EPIK is all about and some more gratuitous photographs of people doing things you wish you could. »READ MORE
Did you miss last Thursday’s grand opening of the Valley’s first Tea and Champagne lounge? Well fear not, because our gal about town, Amanda Szot, was there at Narcisse with a microphone in one hand and a Champagne flute in the other to get all the decadent details.
The Valley’s classic car auctions may have motored out of town, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do a little four-wheeled fantasizing. Meet Ferrari’s version of a station wagon, the 2012 Ferrari FF. Featuring four seats and a hatchback, it’s about as practical as you’ll get from this famed Italian maker of mid-life crises mobiles. After all, what better way to get the kids to school on time than with a 651 horsepower behemoth capable of going to from zero to 60mph in 3.7 seconds and topping out at 208mph?
Psst. Just a quick reminder that someone you know has a birthday coming up, and it’s kind of a big deal. Yes, next February 14 the state of Arizona turns 100, and one local restaurant is already planning a party. The Stockyards Restaurant (which has only been around since 1947) is working on a special Centennial Menu, and is inviting all amateur chefs to submit their best recipes.
There’s an old saying about idle hands and it usually takes form in late night drunk texts and aimless internet browsing while hanging around in coffee shops. From the quizzical minds of Soul Pancake comes this ingenious idea that allows you to waste your time in a much more productive manner. All you’ll need is a pen, a scrap of doodle-worthy paper and some from of a digital camera (like your smart phone) Directions after the jump. »READ MORE

For decades, they Valley has held the unusual distinction of being the largest metropolitan area in the US without a major theme park. Now, one company hopes to change that by building a year-round winter wonderland where Valley residents can sled and even have a snowball fight in the dead of summer.

In yet another example of people going crazy from the heat, a posh Detroit hotel (oxymoron alert?) says it was stiffed by an AZ-based film company last summer. Is this another sad sign of the economic downturn? Who cares, we’re more amazed that AZ has a local film company.
As the new executive chef at Lon’s at The Hermosa, Jeremy Pacheco has some sizable boots to fill. Aside from following in the footsteps of famed former chefs such as Michael DeMaria and Michael Rusconi, he’s also inherited an iconic dining space with a diehard following (the type of crowd that doesn’t always take too kindly to changes). However, that hasn’t stopped this Las Vegas transplant (and Tucson native) from adding a bit of Vegas glitz and foodie sizzle to this stately AAA Four Diamond restaurant in the heart of posh Paradise Valley.

Wanna meet rockstar/serial Reality TV dater, Bret Michaels? You know, without going on Rock of Love 5, that is. Well, you might want to unskinny bop on over to this weekend’s Scottsdale Fashion Week, because we hear he’ll be on hand supporting his latest discovery, a pair of up-and-coming fashion models. And in true rockstar fashion, they’re underage!

For now, it seems that the powers that be at Barrett-Jackson are sticking by their assertion that the car up for auction is the same one that transported JFK’s body following his assassination in Tucson.
“Not only did the ambulance transport JFK following his untimely death, it’s one of the finest examples of an un-restored ambulance from that time period,” stated Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “It’s also, without a doubt, one of the most significant and historical vehicles ever offered for sale.”
For an upgraded version of the burger and milkshake combos enjoyed at retro diners, re-visit Bourbon Steak’s Bar Burger Menu. And by upgrade we mean foie gras as a burger topping and alcohol rich milkshakes. The Malted Bourbon Shake is a spiked salty and sweet combo that pairs perfectly with any one of Michael Mina’s mouthwatering burgers. Make one at home with the recipie below or head to Bourbon Steak yourself. We promise you won’t miss the greasy countertops or jukebox tunes of the diner dive.
In case we didn’t emphasize his sheer badassedness enough, here is a Friday Mix Tape from D.J William F-ing Reed….remix style. We could say more about his fame, influence and infinite knowledge on all things music related, but we already did. »READ MORE
Oh, Friday. How do we love thee? Let us count the ways with another jam-packed (and pedestrian-friendly) Weekend Guide. Yes, all of our events are located side-by-side-by-side in Downtown Phoenix, starting this Saturday as your Phoenix Suns host the 10th Annual Celebrity Shootout. OK, so techincally it looks more like a cast reunion for “Stomp The Yard 2″ as at least three of the ‘celebs’ participating in this year’s charity basketball game starred in that fine flick. But seriously, this game is always a great time and will also feature a who’s who of hip hop & RnB stars, including Common, Romeo and Chris Brown. (Yes, that Chris Brown).
In honor of the recent foofaraw about John Daly being uninvited to next week’s Waste Management Open, we’re re-running this post on the the famously hard-partying golfer’s, um, unique sense of style. Do not adjust your computer screen, those colors are correct.
Normally, we’d rather watch grass grow than a golf tournament on TV. However, a certain golf-related story taking place across the pond has certainly caught our attention. For the first time in years, famed rabble-rouser John Daly is making headlines for his play and not his drinking, gambling, eating and multiple-marriages problems. (Put him down for a four on that last one.) However, all we know is he’s been rocking some of the fugliest outfits since Rodney Dangerfield in “Caddyshack.”
It’s that time … again. A jam-packed, mouthwatering look at all things food-related within a 50 mile radius. Lucky you. So join us around the proverbial (and sassy) water cooler as we highlight our fav food know-it-alls and their infinite knowledge of the here and now of the Valley food scene. Here’s a redux of this week’s happenings on our favorite food blogs. »READ MORE
If you haven’t been reading DJ William F-ing Reed’s The Mix Tape every Friday here on DLT, you’re missing out. Like, seriously missing out. As one of the Valley’s true music movers-and-shakers, he pumps our ears full of noteworthy indie artists such as Best Coast, Neon Indian, Caribou and The Naked & Famous. And now you can catch Professor (he teaches “Artist Management & Talent Development” at Mesa Community College) F-ing Reed every Friday from 10pm-midnight on KWSS 106.7 with his new radio show Live Transmission.
As we count down the days until the opening of our fav new movie house in Downtown Phoenix, we’ve put together an ode to the Roosevelt Arts District. Edgy, urban and surprisingly walkable, here’s your First Friday itinerary.
Downtown may not have the best track record with keeping restaurants open, but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t great places to dine, view and drink (or drink, dine, view and drink) as a way to mix-up your typically drab dinner and a movie routine. It just so happens some of our favorites are all a stone’s throw away from each other inside the Roosevelt Art District. DLT has mapped out a perfect Friday night to make sure “Everyday is Exactly the Same” doesn’t become that song that defines your existence. »READ MORE
Meet famed Arizona artist, cowboy, gambler and notorious womanizer, Alonzo “Lon” Megargee. After leaving Philidelphia at the turn of the century, Megargee landed in the then pristine desert wilds of Paradise Valley, where he hand-built his own studio and guest house before passing away as a mostly-respectable Western artist in 1960. Today, Valley residents can still get a piece of his Gatsby-esque life and rich contribution to Arizona history by visiting the Hermosa Inn (built on the grounds of his ranch house) and taking advantage of the award-winning Artist-In-Resident Series at critically acclaimed restaurant, Lon’s.
A convicted killer who escaped from a minimum-security prison near Kingman, AZ told police he planned to overdose on heroin at Yellowstone National Park and then get eaten by bears. Wait what? That’s crazy. A convicted killer is being held in a minimum security prison?!?
But back to the bear plan, Tracy Province (pictured) told a Mohave County sheriff’ that he didn’t follow through because of “divine intervention and because Yellowstone was too cold.” Um, OK. He was eventually captured in Wyoming after 10 days on the lam.
