$95 Million Mystery

December 10, 2010 | 10:44 AM | News | By Frank Johnson

As we reported last week, someone in the tiny river town of Fort  Mohave, AZ just became an instant multi-millionaire after winning the Poweball lottery. Or not. Truth is, no one knows anything right now except the winning $95M ticket was sold at the local Safeway, and despite extensive media coverage, no one has come forward to claim the prize.

But that hasn’t stopped people from speculating, including right here on the ol’ DLT message boards. After all, what’s more reliable than an anonymous Internet comment board? Says DLT reader, Nancy, “I have a powerball ticket and I live in fort mohave, az, but it is not the winner. I purchased mine at the circle k in bullhead instead of my closest grocery store which is that safeway. SOOOOO sad it wasn’t me, but happy someone locally is very rich.”

Meanwhile, the local newspaper recently tackled the latest rumors and conspiracy theories, including that the winner was 19 and too young to play the lottery (you need to be 21 in AZ). In fact, the Mohave Daily News says that some are speculating that Safeway has already fired an employee for selling the ticket to an underage person. “More rumors had the lottery levying unspecified sanctions against the store and Safeway firing the employee who sold the winning ticket … but Cathy Kloos, a Tempe-based spokeswoman for the chain, said she was unaware of any employee discipline related to the lottery ticket.”

Which dovetails nicely with another theory proposed by DLT reader, Carolyne who commented, “The girl who won was 19 years old… looking at jail time and the store who sold the ticket will prob be fined… that sucks..”

Sucks, indeed.
