Get Out Your Lighters, Fireworks are Legal in AZ

Fireworks in AZ! Sort of.Here at DLT we have a few pyromaniacs on staff, and apparently a licensed pyro-technician. (WTF Anna?!?) Although technically, we aren’t real pyromaniacs, as we only light things on fire that should be lit on fire, like a certain bogus online poll and anything with Christian Audigier on it.

So you know we’ve been counting down the hours until midnight today, when fireworks finally became legal in the Grand Canyon State. Sort of.

In 2009 legislators sent a bill to the desk of Governor Jan Brewer that would legalize sparklers and other fireworks that send sparks in the air. Unfortunately, that big buzz-kill, Brewer, crushed our dreams and vetoed the bill, citing the risk of flaming explosives in the middle of a desert. A few months back, House Bill 2246 tried again, and this time Brewer signed on the line that is dotted.

Roman Candle Firework...still illegal. So get our your lighters and count your fingers, because as of today those who are 16 and older can buy and use ground and hand-held consumer fireworks. Yawn! In other words, the really cool ones that are designed to explode above the ground and launch high into the sky are still outlawed without a permit or license. It’s enough to make us want to fire our completely legal concealed weapons inside a bar in protest. (Hey Anna …wanna go us buy some sky rockets, torpedoes, and roman candles?)

So what is legal? Consumer fireworks such as sparklers, glow worms, snakes, ground spinners and smoke devices. (Yes, those sparklers you just handed out at your kid’s birthday party have been ILLEGAL.)

Even sillier, Bill 2246 also allows any city, town or county to override the new law and make these fireworks completely illegal once again. So fellow pyros should be sure to check your city code and watch out because the AZ Fire Marshall can impose a civil penalty of $1,000 for each person caught violating this new law. Money that will be put into a wild-land fire suppression and pre-positioning equipment fund for resources and payment for activities relating to combating wildfires and supporting other unplanned natural disasters in the future.

Anybody got a light?
