While exiting the soaring tents of this year’s Scottsdale Fashion Week, it was difficult not to notice the mesmerizing glow emanating from a certain tow trailer. Yes, trailer. Manned by local artisan, Heidi Martincic, this campy camper housed the most impressive setup of jewelry and eye-catching trinkets we’d ever seen. Think: chic gypsy flea market and you’ve summed up Paris Montana, Martinicic’s way-cool line of jewelry and accessories. Recently, DLT sat down with Martincic to talk about her often bumpy journey from a Mercedes-driving corporate type to a Jeep and Airstream-traveling fashionista. Check out more of Heidi’s story and some pieces from her collection (as well as the trailer) after the jump!
Are you a native to the Valley?
No, I was raised in Montana but I have been here for 15 years.
What did you do prior to Paris Montana and what inspired you to completely alter your lifestyle?
I was a director at a top 10 ad agency in the Valley but, following a divorce and a mid-life crisis, I wanted to do something completely different that delights and inspires me. I now love what I do and am so lucky to be living my dream.
Where did you get the idea to use an Airstream trailer as a traveling store?
I’ve always wanted an airstream trailer and I wanted a store that was event driven rather than having set hours. I sort of had an “ah-ha” moment. The trailer fits with the gypsy lifestyle too, I’m on the road about 4 days a month, roughly 50 to 75 days per year.
What inspires the creation of your jewelry and how would you describe the style of your products?
Traveling to Europe. The European flea markets, specifically items at Paris flea markets (hence the name) and how they were displayed. I’d describe it as vintage, eclectic and salvaged jewelry, edgy.
Fur is very popular this season and I noticed you’re using a lot of recycled furs in your Fall line. How do you obtain the recycled fur?
I have a friend from Montana who’s a furrier; he goes to rendezvous (an annual fur trader expo) on the lookout for vintage pieces and pieces that would’ve otherwise been thrown out.
Are there any established jewelers or designers that you admire?
I like Beth Church who’s a local jewelry designer and Coco Chanel is my icon. She is the original costume jewelry queen who made it okay to wear huge pearls around your neck. She was a maverick woman and made costume jewelry acceptable to the world.
Do you sell any of your products through local stores or how can people purchase your jewelry?
I hold a once-a-month online one day sale, usually every third Thursday of the month. I put the offer out to my list of existing customers and pieces can be purchased through the online shopping site on my blog. I also have an on-site event every third Thursday at Sirens and Saints in Phoenix. The next is actually this Thursday (November 18, 6-10 pm). After that, my next event will be at the Barrett-Jackson car auction in January and I also host private parties upon request.
