Feeling famished? Fabulous, because here’s a redux of this week’s happenings on our favorite food blogs.
EATERAZ is dreaming of peace, love and cupcakes! And, so are we. (No seriously, we just bought tickets to Cupcake Love-In, an inaugural cupcake charity extravaganza at the Hotel Valley Ho). Activities include cupcake sampling from local bakeries and pastry chefs, a cupcake judging competition, childrenʼs decorating station, cupcake eating contest, photo booths, raffle prizes and Locals Only Phoenix Webcast! Two local beneficiaries, Singleton Moms and Safe Haven for Animals, will receive 100 percent of ticket sales, as well as a generous portion of the event’s proceeds. (Established in 2006, Singleton Moms is a non-profit that helps single mothers in their battle against cancer through easing financial and household responsibilities; Safe Haven for Animals is a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter providing foster care and adoption services throughout the Valley.) Buy your tickets here. Oh, and salivate over BrandX’s “Cupcake Love-in” tees (available in three yummy designs) here. Exciting tidbit: Phoenix’s sweetest Food Writer-Author-Chef (hint: Gwen Walters of Pen & Fork) is judging the cakefest. Confection perfection!
EricEatsOut: Eric’s starvation diet is over and he is craving Greek food (yes, you can crave Greek food). Where is he getting his Minotaur on? Athena Greek Cuisine, a gargantuan Greek treasure located near Scottsdale Road and the Loop 101. As Eric states, “You might as well forget that you’re in a restaurant, because the place looks like the Greek section of ‘It’s a Small World’ at Disneyland. Every stereotypical Grecian styling cue is present: ornate columns framing a centrally located bar, Zeus-inspired lions at the entrance, statues, etched glass.” Reason enough to forget the Trader Joe’s frozen latkes, we say! Though his review is less than glowing, Eric still has us craving flavorful dolmades and roasted lamb. Athena Greek Cuisine: 7000 E. Mayo Blvd. Oh, and don’t forget to check out Eric’s new DLT column, Eric Eats Out Speaks Out!
Pen & Fork: This week, Chef Gwen Walters shares Linda Avery ponderings regarding “Chef Ink” (yep, just like Miami Ink). And, then Avery reviews Chicago Chef Rick Tramanto’s latest cookbook. Tramonto chose steak, a culinary hallmark of Chicago, as the centerpiece of his cookbook. In fact, the text is titled Steak with Friends: At Home with Rick Tramonto. “Rick Tramonto’s latest cookbook Steak with Friends: At Home with Rick Tramonto has a lovely cover photo of his family in their home with an array of food spread before them. But, your eyes immediately go to the words Chef and Faith written in a medieval script on the chef’s forearms… Tramonto has 24 tattoos, those on the left side of his body are about his faith, and those decorating his right side are about cooking.” Melon and Tomato Gazpacho with Grilled Shrimp included. Isn’t Chow Bella just a jack of all (blog)trades? They’re talkin’ high tea at The Phoenician, the Tomatina Festival (happening this week at Iruna in Scottsdale), Mexican popsicles, a step-by-step guide to growing your own tomatoes (culinary forepaly essential to flawless Florentine food) and Spicy miso ramen at Sushi Ken.
