Who’s The Hipper Hipster?

July 20, 2010 | 12:46 PM | News | By Staff

So, we’re not sure if everybody’s crazy from the heat, but there’s a full-fledged hep-cat fur fight going on. Yes, the music reviewer from the New Times is brawling with AZ Central‘s nightlife guru over a snarky write-up on this weekend’s Silversun Pickups show. Meanwhile, another Arizona Republic reporter is jumping in the fray, probably still pissed about the Middle-Aged, Bloated New Times calling him a sex toy for Mayor Phil Gordon. (Seriously!) Can’t we all just get along, people, and leave the fighting to the advertising sales staffs?

It all started when the New Times‘ music dude, Martin Cizmar, was offended that he had to wait in a hot, sweaty line to catch some cooler-than-thou band, all because said band was opening for the latest hipster obsession, Silversun Pickups. In response, Cizmar devoted his ‘review’ to calling the SP’s a poor Smashing Pumpkins knock-off.

Next, AZ Central’s entertainment editrix, Megan Finnerty blasted back on Twitter, “Insightful review of Silversun Pickups from @crumbler-http://irk.com/VcL Then there’s this awkwardness @phxmusicdotcomhttp://bit.ly/anjcSG In short, she just bagged on Cizmar’s review while leading readers to check out a competing review by Casey Newton, a Republic beat reporter who moonlights as a blogger.

Still following? Good ’cause now the fur’s about to start flying. Following the New Times usual MO of responding to the slightest provocation with insane rage, name calling and ungodly word counts, Cizmar left a blistering post on Casey Newton’s blog then Tweeted that he called out Newton and his #1 fan, Finnerty.

Now you would think that would be that, right? Not by a long shot. At last check, Finnerty responded by calling Cizmar, ”a bitter, angry young man.” While Cizmar retorted, “If there are two things you don’t know anything about, Megan, they are writing and music.”

Me-ow! While we don’t really have an opinion either way (I went to said show, enjoyed it, moved on with life), we can’t leave without shedding a little light on why this feud might have escalated so quickly. A little Google searching reveals that the New Timesprofessional hitmanarsonist political reporter, Stephen Lemons likes to call Casey Newton, Lil’ Casey, as in this charming headline: “Lil’ Casey Newton pulls out kneepads for Mayor Phil Gordon.”

Aye, aye, aye! Where are the EATERAZ boys when we need ‘em?

We just learned that the Consulate of Switzerland’s office is down the block on Shoeman Lane (no friggin’ joke- look it up!). It’s times like these that maybe we should go knock on their door. Not just because the Swiss are neutral, but because they’re usually rich and sexy.

There’s no connection there. I’m a fan of the New Times and enjoy their work, Stephen Lemons’ included.

I would also add that this is not a “feud” that “escalated quickly,” but rather — as is clear from the comments — a discussion about music criticism that ended with us both having a better understanding of one another.

Little Bird told me that Cizmar is soon to be fired from PHXNT. He’s scum. And even HE knows he’s scum.

Martin Cizmar is a known fool. No one in the local industry respects him or his writing/critiques (if you can call it that).

Bravo, Dawson, Bravo! On a side note: let’s all pray Cizmar gets canned soon.

    I’ll second what Casey said.

Also, I had no idea who he was. I do not read the Arizona Republic and I didn’t work for New Times when that column ran.

Also, the Republic ran a review Megan could have promoted if she’s wanted. I think she may have just genuinely enjoyed his piece: http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2010/07/18/20100718silversun-pickups-marquee-theatre.html

Either way, I think we can all agree my review was awesome and everyone learned a lot from it. Good day sir.

Of course Martin would take the time to comment in defense of himself… it’s his part time job (defending his shiteous blather). I’m my 35 years, I’ve never seen a music editor not only comment on his own articles but ATTACK the commenters for having their opinions. Where do I sign up to have Martin Cizmar fired? Cmon, there’s got to be a petition by now??

Hats off to you, Mr. Fearnow. This Martin Cizmar has had it coming for a long time now. Have your read the comments on all his posted New Times stories? He’s hated more than Hitler…

Hey, do us a favor & fwd this story to whoever is in charge at The Phoenix New Times. I believe they should be aware of the damage Martin Cizmar is causing to the reputation of their newspaper. I feel bad for the advertisers.

Martin Cizmar is a fine example of what’s wrong with PHXNT. He is a pompous idiot. His writing is deplorable at best. He very much deserves all the hate and distain that comes his way.

“Following the New Times usual MO of responding to the slightest provocation with insane rage, name calling and ungodly word counts, Cizmar left a blistering post…”! Ain’t that the truth! Cizmar goes on a wild rage any and every time someone comes back at him. He’d probably b*tch slap a baby if it gave him a slanted look. He’s such a puss.
