Chow Down: This Week In Food Blogs

June 30, 2010 | 6:26 PM | Restaurants | By Meghan Luther

Drumroll, ladies and gentlemen, because… Here’s our third redux of this week’s happenings on our favorite food blogs.

Fill Your Plate is talking fruits and veggies! The following items are included in Fill Your Plate’s “What’s In Season This Summer, Arizona?” chart: apples (July-September), radishes (July-October), Sweet Peppers (July-October), Tomatoes (May-November), Winter Squash (August-November), Cucumber (April-December), Figs (June-October), Pears (mid-August-September) and Black Eyed Peas (July-September). Organic enthusiasts: Visit Desert Root Farms, a Community Supported Agriculture farm, in Queen Creek for herbs, veggies, recipes and storing techniques. Buy local: AZ’s own, Basha’s Grocery Store has all locally-grown produce and when you buy locally from Basha’s, the money is reinvested locally.

Our pals at EATERAZ are reporting a 7-day culinary event at the JW Marriott at Desert Ridge, just in time for Day 1 (July 1st). The $30 event “passport” includes $45 in credit toward dinner at any one of the four restaurants on the Desert Ridge Marketplace property and 15 percent off any future dining at those restaurants. The Festival kicks off with a free “Health & Wellness” cooking demo at 5 pm tomorrow, followed by a 6 pm “Taste of Desert Ridge” featuring nibbles from all the resort’s restaurants.

The folks at the New TimesChow Bella blog are sophisticating their palates for the famed Best of Phoenix issue (out September 30th) with “daily servings” of CB’s 100 Favorite Dishes from across the Valley. Our stomachs were rumbling just imagining proposed Dish #73, Coq au vin at Vincent’s Market Bistro. We won’t try to duplicate: Coq au vin is a signature dish, and for good reason. Tender free-range chicken practically falls apart when you touch it with your fork, and the sauce — a heady ambrosia of red wine, onions, and mushrooms — is so good you’ll want to dunk your complimentary croissants in it to soak it all up. Luscious, buttery gratin dauphinois rounds out the plate. Comfort food doesn’t get more elegant than this.” Thank you, chef Vincent Guerithault for making your food affordable to us starving writers.

This week, JuxtaPalate posted a list of favorite Tempe neighborhood restaurants. We were more than thrilled to see one of our favorite bakeries on the list – Essence Bakery Café. Traditional French macaroon to die for. Try the refreshing Grapefruit; it will be replaced by Pumpkin Spice in the fall.

Last but certainly not least, the once rude ‘n crude Eric S. is teaching us life lessons on his food blog, Eric Eats Out, after a religious experience at the much-anticipated Renegade Canteen“Root for the good guys,” Eric says. And, “Robert McGrath [chef at the Canteen] is one of the good guys in the restaurants business.” And, then he talks of his flawlessly seasoned catfish entree and “perfect” chocolate toffee pecan pie with (get ready) Bourbon spiked ice cream. This is a rave review we have never seen from Eric before. He even calls himself out on his fabulously rose-colored glasses when he states: “If you think that I must be on Renegade Canteen’s payroll to rave so thoroughly, you’re wrong.  It’s just that they got so many things right and have done so very early on. Things can only get better.” Encore!
