First Fridays Is a No Show

First FridayFriday nights in Phoenix’s ever evolving downtown will be getting just a little sleepier in the upcoming summer months as the popular arts festival known as First Fridays takes a vacation of its own. What will hipsters and up-to-no-good college students do now?

AZ Central is reporting that the monthly street fair is working to make its location more light-rail friendly and in the meantime will be postponing its July and August festivals.

Greg Esser of Roosevelt Row, Phoenix’s collection of art galleries and locally owned and operated businesses along a stretch of east Roosevelt St., said, “Light rail has been a critical new addition…Heritage and Science Park, A.E. England Gallery, CityScape, Hance Park, Phoenix Art Museum are all connected by light rail. Get on a train and get off at five stops. That’s the future. That’s where this should go.

Let’s just hope this postponement doesn’t turn Phoenix’s only artistically curated event into a watered down version of bad a high school art show.

First Friday is not going on vacation. Galleries will still be open in July and August. The only event on hiatus is the Roosevelt street closure. I’ll miss the festive atmosphere on Roosevelt, but it will be a good reminder to explore galleries in other parts of town, all of which contribute to the First Friday experience.
