The Weekender: World Cup Cocktails

June 11, 2010 | 3:59 PM | Food | By Carlyn Mumm

GOOOAAALLLL!!! With the World Cup in full swing, we’ve accepted the fact that we’re going to be spending the next 30 days staring at our television screens drinking copious amounts of alcohol. Lucky for us, we have specialty cocktails for all of our favorite teams. Play like a champion, drink like a champion. Recipes after the jump.

ITALY: Tuscan Sangria
One 750-milliliter bottle Tuscan red wine
24 oz fresh orange juice
6 oz Tuaca (a vanilla- and citrus-flavored liqueur)
3 oz Punt e Mes (a bittersweet Italian vermouth)
4 oz fresh lime juice
4 oz limoncello
1/4 C sugar
Ice
Orange slices and cinnamon sticks, for garnish

In a pitcher, combine the red wine, orange juice, Tuaca, Punt e Mes, lime juice, limoncello and sugar. Stir well to dissolve the sugar. To serve, fill wine glasses halfway with ice. Add the sangria and garnish each glass with an orange slice and a cinnamon stick.

BRAZIL: The Ultimate Caipirinha
8 oz Cabana Cachaça
8 tbs superfine sugar OR 4 ounces of simple syrup
5 limes quartered

Muddle the quartered limes in the bottom of a pitcher, add other ingredients and a lot of ice. Stir roughly 30 times. Makes 1 full pitcher.

USA: The Red White & Blue Shooter
1/2 oz grenadine
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz blue curaçao

Pour ingredients in shot glasses in order in order to achieve the layering effect. First, the grenadine, then the vodka, and finally top off with the blue curacao. Use a spoon to deflect pouring, otherwise the pour will mix all three liquors together.

FRANCE: Chambord Lemonade
15 oz vodka
5 oz Chambord
30 oz sugar free lemonade

Stir ingredients together into a pitcher and add ice. Garnish with fresh berries or a lemon.

MEXICO: Corralejo Repo Margarita
30 oz of Corralejo Blanco Tequila
14 oz of fresh lime juice
10 oz of La Sierra agave nectar

Combine all ingredients and serve on the rocks or neat with a lime wheel garnish and salted rim.

ENGLAND:Blackthorn English
1 1/2 shots sloe gin
1 shot gin
3/4 shot sweet vermouth
3 dashed orange bitters

Shake ingredients in shaker with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with an orange zest.

CHILE: Pisco Sour
2 oz pisco brandy
1 oz lime juice
1/4 oz simple syrup
1/2 egg white
1 dash Angostura bitters

Shake ingredients vigorously with ice. Strain into a champagne flute, and add the bitters as an aromatic garnish.

[...] Most important, don’t forget to enjoy the party while you grill. Just because you’re wearing a “De Grillmeister” apron, doesn’t mean you have to stand sweating over the grill while everyone else has the fun. Keep the menu simple and include dishes that can be prepared in advance. But don’t confuse simple for boring: Bleu cheese burgers are easy to make and have an extra kick; wings can be marinated in advance and taste great when finished on the grill; try grilling fruit skewers for that extra wow factor.
