Sad news on the print dinosaur local magazine front. A little birdie told us another of the Arizona Republic‘s glossy monthlies was quietly shuttered last week. Yes, AZ Society is to borrow the coinage of the EATERAZ crew, dunzo. And we just received confirmation from the pub’s editorial staff (yes, singular), Cindy Miller, who has, fortunately, been transferred to another job at the paper. AZ Society is survived, for now, by the Republic’s AZ magazine.
Launched a few years back, as a part of the Republic’s big push into the monthly mag biz, we can tell you from personal experience that the various print pubs around town were shaking in their boots at the time, facing the prospect of a deep-pocketed, well-staffed new competitor. Within months the Republic rolled out splashy, if short-lived titles such as 85255 (meh), while buying up smaller publications such as BIZ AZ (RIP).
Turns out, we all should have been more concerned about a little thing called the Internet. Just ask other late local print pubs such as 101 North, Trends, Frontdoors (now online), 944, Post Magazine and, um, Desert Living.
