Drumroll, ladies and gentlemen, because… Here’s our third redux of this week’s happenings on our favorite food blogs.
Some people still say the 4th of July is about patriotism, national celebration and the glory of liberty. Hate to call your star-spangled bluff, but the 4th of July is about gluttonous bbq’s, cold beers, really bright fireworks and weekend vacas. So with that in mind, we’re breaking down potential Independence Day vacation venues and activities. Print your itinerary after the jump.
The flip flop may be a no no in the workplace (not to mention a podiatrist’s worst nightmare), but it’s a summertime mainstay here in the Valley. Which is why we we’re so excited when a reader turned us on to Pocketflops, an L.A. based shoe company that’s launched a series of folding flip flops that’ll make going from the office to the street as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Happy Wednesday everybody. Now that we’re finally chugging downhill towards the weekend, our thoughts have turned to our favorite part of the day. Yes, we’re thinking happy hour. But not just any happy hour. We’re talking about an island getaway filled with tropical tidbits and frosty tipples—all served at prices not seen since the 1950s.
Yahoo Sports is reporting that Amar’e Stoudemire has opted out of the final year of his contract with the Phoenix Suns. According to Amar’e's awesomely-named agent, Happy Walters, Stoudemire and the Suns were still discussing a possible contract extension late Tuesday night, but Walters said: “The offer isn’t where it needs to be yet, but we’ve had a good open, cordial dialogue with the Suns … we’re exercising the opt out and we’ll see what presents itself for Amar’e on the market.”
Here’s a crazy story that seems to have slipped under the local radar. Pictured is Juliana Redding, a 21-year-old model/aspiring actress who was found murdered in her apartment in ritzy Santa Monica, CA more than two years ago. A former Tucson resident, Redding’s story probably would have been bigger news locally if the Old Pueblo still had a functioning newspaper. Now, however, the case is back in the headlines as the woman arrested in her murder has been linked to a disgruntled business associate of Redding’s father in a potential murder-for-hire plot.
Recently, the arts world was all atwitter that First Friday was going on hiatus over the summer. The confusion started when the AZ Republic reported, and various media outlets (ahem) joined in to say that the popular arts festival is scaling back in July and August as the founders work to make its location more light-rail friendly.

Breaking News: There’s a new restaurant coming to the Biltmore Fashion Park, and Sam Fox is not involved. Scheduled to open in the fall, Seasons 52 was cooked up by Florida-based Darden Restaurants, owners of such gourmet gastronomic palaces as Red Lobster and Olive Garden. However, before you dismiss this new eatery a corporate hack-job, know that Darden also owns one of our fav chophouses, The Capital Grille, while existing Seasons locations average 4/5 stars on Yelp.
For those of us not blessed with a backyard pool, summertime can feel like an endless road trip. Like nomads, we roam from friends houses to various local resorts, where we ‘check in’ (i.e. slink past the lobby) in order to get some precious pool-time. However, now that we’re all grown up (right?), it’s so much easier to just book a room at a smoking rate, and then strut around the pool deck like we own the place. And after years of ‘visiting’ Valley resorts, we’ve developed a few favs …

Summer is a tough time for Valley theater lovers as most local stages go dark. However, it’s also the time when local theaters announce the upcoming schedules for 2010 – 11. One of our favs, The Broadway Series will be making its way to Phoenix’s legendary and beautifully restored Orpheum Theatre, as well as the futuristically designed Mesa Arts Center starting in October.
