So the good folks at the James Beard Foundation have weighed in with some (incredibly complicated) Memorial Day recipe ideas. However, one in particluar caught our interest: A potato salad recipe created by 19th century French author Alexandre Dumas. Who knew the author of “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Three Musketeers” was a foodie?
We can’t wait to pair it with this recipe for Beards Fav Burgers that we found on Food Network.com
Ingredients
- 2 pounds chopped beef chuck or round
- 1 onion, finely grated with juices reserved
- 1 tbs heavy cream
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Unsalted butter
- Vegetable oil, as needed
- Kosher salt, to taste
Directions
In a bowl, mix the ground beef with the onion and onion juice, then add a tablespoon of heavy cream and some freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Form into patties—a 6 to 8-ounce patty for an average serving. Using a skillet (preferably cast iron), cook the hamburgers in the butter and oil over fairly high heat, giving it 4 to 5 minutes a side, depending on how well done you like it. Salt this creamy, oniony, peppery hamburger before serving it on a buttered bun or English muffin, or as a main course with sliced tomatoes and onions or some home-fried potatoes.
